Too Bright to Hear Too Loud to See by Juliann Garey
A studio executive leaves his family and travels the world giving free reign to the bipolar disorder he’s been forced to hide for 20 years.
“Juliann Garey writes with stark, lucid power about the tumbling journey into madness and the agonizing climb back out.”–Brian Yorkey, book and lyrics for Next to Normal
In her tour-de-force first novel, Juliann Garey takes us inside the restless mind, ravaged heart, and anguished soul of Greyson Todd, a successful Hollywood studio executive who leaves his wife and young daughter and for a decade travels the world giving free rein to the bipolar disorder he’s been forced to keep hidden for almost 20 years. The novel intricately weaves together three timelines: the story of Greyson’s travels (Rome, Israel, Santiago, Thailand, Uganda); the progressive unraveling of his own father seen through Greyson’s eyes as a child; and the intimacies and estrangements of his marriage. The entire narrative unfolds in the time it takes him to undergo twelve 30-second electroshock treatments in a New York psychiatric ward. This is a literary page-turner of the first order, and a brilliant inside look at mental illness.
Reviews
“A fine, sharp-tongued debut. “Too Bright to Hear Too Loud to See” is a novel deeply wrapped around its subject, but it has its sights on grander themes — namely, how to survive in a world not made for you.”
—Los Angeles Times
“[Greyson Todd] is interesting and complex…We are deftly led through his erratic trains of thought, and suddenly we are with him in the irrational, sometimes violent place, and oddly, we understand how we got there.”
—All Things Considered
“You won’t be able to put down this exhilarating debut novel… brave and touching.”
—Marie Claire
“Garey delivers a genuinely harrowing story that, against all odds, is deeply enjoyable.”
—Boston Globe
“A gripping tale of a man’s unraveling.”
—Real Simple
“[Garey’s] tense, unsettling, and convincing portrait of mental illness…[makes] a dark novel glow.”
—Entertainment Weekly
“Greyson Todd is the most fully-realized fictional character I’ve come across in a while…Garey doesn’t shy away from the depths of her character’s pain, but scenes that could easily become gratuitous in lesser hands are rendered with restraint and grace. She excels at leading us down the rabbit hole…Garey creates an atmosphere of exquisite tension.”
—The Millions
“Brilliantly captures the effects of electro-convulsive therapy…[Garey's] prose, with its mixture of the poetic and the profane, illuminates the psyche of a bipolar man, who seeks not a Hollywood ending but a restoration of the ‘glimmer’ of his faded past.”
—Huffington Post
“[Garey] writes…with a jarring, effective immediacy…She shows a sharp, witty voice, and an ability to tackle a difficult topic with grace.”
—Boston Phoenix
“Greyson Todd is so utterly human…with the sheer force of her talent, [Garey] makes us want to look. And she makes us laugh. And she helps us understand and feel compassion.”
—Pittsburgh Post Gazette
“This is an important novel, an eye-opener, and, at times, a white-knuckle horror show in its depiction of mental illness.”
—David Abrams, Fobbit
“Garey evokes in stark detail the torment and raw suffering of mental illness. A compelling read.”
—Library Journal, Starred Review
“A racing, vertiginous read, harrowing and heart-breaking and humorous at once. Greyson Todd has a magnetic presence, from which it is extremely difficult to step away. Juliann Garey has written a brilliant novel, allowing us the privilege of travelling—hurtling, really—in the presences of Grey’s troubled mind. By doing so, she makes his single, deeply moving story something even greater: a comment on family, and illness, and the complicated tracks that remain within our memory, waiting to be traveled down again.”
—Daniel Mason, The Piano Tuner
“Garey breathes life into an uncomfortable and often misunderstood subject and creates a riveting experience.”
—Kirkus Reviews
“In her debut, screenwriter Garey delivers a commanding portrait… A vividly written chronicle of one man’s attempt to conquer his mental illness.”
—Booklist
“As heartbreaking as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and as hilarious as A Confederacy of Dunces, I think Garey is a genius.”
—Jennifer Belle, High Maintenance and The Seven Year Bitch
“Authentic . . . earnest.”
—Publishers Weekly
“Juliann Garey writes with stark, lucid power about the tumbling journey into madness and the agonizing climb back out. Her electric prose trembles and her images vibrate at the edges, affording a rare and precious experience of the troubled mind from the inside out. It’s essential writing—terrifying, exhilarating, absurd, achingly human and absolutely compelling.”
—Brian Yorkey, Next To Normal
“Strap me down and give this novel to me in strong doses”
—Quivering Pen
Too Bright to Hear will help you appreciate the brain of a mentally ill person, their struggle, and the resiliency of human relationships…a must read for the craft alone!”

He did kill the man’s entire family in a car accident, and he may have been drinking, though thanks to the resulting coma he can’t remember much about that day. And that’s okay, because Derek is learning all about it from the district attorney as he explains to the jury why the young painter should go to prison.
Prison isn’t right now, though – it isn’t breaking into his home, stabbing him, or kidnapping him at gunpoint. And managing his stalker would be much easier if Derek could see him coming. But, he’s incapable of recognizing the man tormenting him, or anyone else. Can’t even recognize his own face in the mirror. Since Derek woke up from his coma, he’s been face blind: a rare condition that renders him unable to identify people by their appearances.
Anyone in Derek’s world of strangers could be his stalker. In this mind-bending thriller, the talented painter is pushed to a tipping point as his reality unravels at the hands of a madman. On its surface, The Blue is a gritty suspense novel about a man’s quest for redemption. Dig deeper and it asks questions about the nature of guilt, innocence, reality and revenge.

Acclaim for Aiden James:
“Aiden James has written a deeply psychological, gripping tale that keeps the readers hooked from page one.”
–Bookfinds review for THE FORGOTTEN EDEN
“Not only is Aiden James a storyteller par excellence, but his material for his story is riveting.”
–Huntress Reviews
“The hook to this excellent suspense thriller is the twists that will keep readers wondering what is going on as nothing is quite what it seems. Adding to the excitement is that the audience will wonder whether the terror is an evil supernatural creature or an amoral human…Aiden James provides a dark thriller that grips fans from the opening.”
–Harriet Klausner, Amazon’s #1 book reviewer for THE FORGOTTEN EDEN
“Aiden James writing style flows very easily and I found that CADES COVE snowballed into a very gripping tale. Clearly the strengths in the piece were as the spirit’s interaction became prevalent with the family… The Indian lore and ceremonies and the flashbacks to Allie Mae’s (earthly) demise were very powerful. I think those aspects separated the work from what we’ve seen before in horror and ghost tales.”
–Evelyn Klebert, author of A GHOST OF A CHANCE and DRAGONFLIES
“Aiden James is insanely talented!”

I t’s the mid 1990′s. The Cold War is over, but old tensions still remain, and often still run hot. This is especially true in the dark and hidden world of modern submarines. A radical, hard-line, Communist government has gained power in North Korea, and has been alarmingly open about desiring to become a nuclear power. Navy petty officer, Mark Reed, has just been transferred on board the USS Omaha (SSN-692) while his wife J.L. awaits his safe return to Pearl Harbor. Their marriage is circling the drain, and long deployments aren’t helping on that score at all. North Korea has devised a plan to recapture her free neighbor to the South, while also managing to cripple both Japan and the United States. And the island of Oahu is crawling with spies and counter-agents who end up with J.L. Reed in their cross-hairs. A very “visual,” fast-paced story of submarine warfare, action adventure of the military/techno-thriller genre, written by an author who has lived in that world. It has proven popular with both active-duty and former military members. It also features a genuine, though unobtrusive, Christian thematic focus. From Deo Volente Publishing.

CARING AND NURTURING
The lion is the emblem of Venice, but the common cat rules its narrow streets and alleyways. A prince among these feline rulers is Piccolo, and what a fine life he leads! Especially after dark-when the streets are full of possibilities!
Then one night, Piccolo makes a discovery that threatens his carefree life and his independence and starts him on a new and special kind of adventure.
In these pages, you will also meet Caesar-Piccolo’s older and somewhat cynical friend, and Sophia-the shoe shop cat, to whom Piccolo turns for advice when his life takes its unexpected turn. And you will meet two irresistible kittens-one spotted and one striped-who need a home and who help Piccolo discover his own tender heart.
Author Carol Talley, who first visited Venice vicariously in 1977, returned to that city-which many call the most beautiful in the world-to capture its watery magic in breathtaking prose.
Illustrator Itoko Maeno’s enchanting renderings of the canals, markets, crooked byways, boats, and bridges of Venice and her wise and witty portraits of its two- and four-legged citizens will delight children and adults alike.
At a time when we are recognizing the need for boys as well as girls to develop nurturing skills, Piccolo appears as a welcome model for all children.
Piccolo leads a life full of adventure and possibilities. And then two homeless kittens decide to adopt the free-spirited Piccolo. “I’m not a Papa cat,” objects Piccolo. “I’m a tomcat.” Children will delight in seeing how the kittens help Piccolo discover his own tender heart and a new kind of adventure.
A SURPRISE and added bonus is the “Enrichment Information” which includes lots of facts about daily life in Venice. There are colorful thumbnail sketches of Venice, Marco Polo, Italian words and phrases, Canals of Venice, Bridges of Venice, Flags of Venice, Regattas and Gondolas and Gondoliers! This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in interesting description.
A second big plus is the “Letter to Parents and Educators” which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with young readers about the message of the story…that “Papas” as well as “Mamas,” can be the most nurturing and caring parents! So even though on the surface, this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.

The Book of Jotham by Arthur Powers
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, Religion & Spirituality, Fiction, Historical Fiction, Religious Fiction
2 012 Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction–Novella Winner
The Book of Jotham by Arthur Powers
For 23 years the completed manuscript of The Book of Jotham sat in the author’s desk drawer–typewritten–collecting dust and time. On an early autumn day in 2012, the manuscript arrived at Tuscany Press, and we discovered this compelling and moving story.
Jotham is a mentally challenged man-child who, like the other apostles, follows Jesus as Christ carries out his ministry and experiences death by crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. Yet the other apostles–the dedicated Mary, Peter, Thomas, and the rest–while they care for Jotham and look out for him, don’t understand why Jesus loves him so. Thomas even says, after Jesus offers a parable, “I don’t see why all the pots can’t be strong and beautiful.”
Jotham may be different, but through him, we come to see Jesus and Jotham not just with our eyes, but also with our hearts.
ARTHUR POWERS is himself a convert to Catholicism. After spending much time in Brazil in the Peace Corps, working with those for whom the Catholic faith is woven into life, and after meeting a woman who eventually became his wife, he came to question his very rational agnosticism. Powers was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith in 1976 as a thoughtful, aware adult of 29 years.
