Showcase Book – The Secrets of Jin-shei
showcase book
The Secrets of Jin-shei by Alma Alexander
T he epic story of a sisterhood where blood relations are nothing compared to the unbreakable bond of the secret sisters — the bond of Jin-Shei.
Reviews
In a mythical Chinese kingdom, members of an ancient sisterhood fight, die, and practice sorcery for one another as they struggle to survive. In the semifeminist kingdom of Syai, young girls, whether heirs to the throne or daughters of seamstresses, vow eternal loyalty to those of their peers whom they find compatible. The oath of jin-shei that they take imposes numerous obligations and transcends all other loyalties. Like a gang of blood brothers, these superheroines try to save not only their sisters but the empire itself in a richly imagined but rather wooden narrative that begins and ends with Tai, the daughter of an accomplished seamstress. While visiting the palace with her mother, Tai becomes the sister of the teenager Little Empress Antian, heir to the throne. Tai’s loyalty is soon tested, however, when the Summer Palace is destroyed by earthquake and all the Imperial family are killed except Liudan, third in line of succession. When the dying Antian asks Tai to look after her sister Liudan, Tai agrees and is soon sister to the new Empress. This relationship will make her life and those of her six other sisters increasingly difficult and dangerous. In separate chapters, those other six are introduced: Xaforn, an orphan raised by the Imperial Guard to be a soldier; crippled Nhia, known for her wisdom; Qiaan, who has a strong social conscience and a secret in her past; Khailin, an alchemist; Tamary, who is descended from royalty and gypsies; and Yuet , a healer. As Liudan consolidates her imperial power, her siblings become increasingly involved in preserving her kingdom, which is soon threatened by powerful enemies led by the evil sorcerer Lihui, who raped Nhia and forced Khailin to marry him. All the sisters are soon caught up in struggle that will take many of their lives. Full indeed, and yet, even so, more episodic than epic. –Kirkus Reviews

Facebook House: Insider tales of Mark Zuckerberg and his empire’s tumultuous first days by Judy Fusco
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Professionals & Academics, Business, Business & Investing, Biography & History, Company Profiles, Biographies & Primers, Company Histories
P rovidential festivities and rituals take place at Facebook House the week before Mark Zuckerberg and the founders of Facebook move in. These mystical events would play a pivotal role in launching the social network company during its early days. At this house, these first Facebook friends cultivate the “War, work, and Play” ethic that propels the site to the first million-member mark and helps it survive the tumultuous first days of Zuckerberg’s world empire. Also, during their serendipitous stay at this California mansion, the prodigious computer hackers make a near-fatal error that compromises the security and future of the site.
Join the author, Judy Fusco, in this previously-untold, compelling narrative of Facebook House, as she weaves together fascinating, real-life, insider tales of the founders of Facebook. Take a look into the secret lives of many Silicon Valley kingpins, and the mysterious house that became headquarters to the social networking startup that changed the world. This is not the Accidental Billionaires-type account of the early days of Facebook, dependent only on the stories of bitter ex-business partners, imagined motives and conjecture. In this alternative, Facebook history, readers enjoy up-close interactive experiences with the main Facebook players and real-life glimpses into the lives and community that launched the company. Follow Mark Zuckerberg, Sean Parker and Dustin Moskovitz in this vivid Facebook House account of the dynamics that can transform wild dreams into reality.
This book is a blend of the best traits of “The Social Network” and “The Facebook Effect” in a fresh, entertaining, quick read. A book you won’t want to put down and that will inspire you to reflect – long after you put it down – on your own desires and dreams.
According to Judy Fusco, author of Facebook House, “In recent years I’ve had the opportunity of closely watching a transformational idea take shape around my dining room table, as a team of young entrepreneurs took a dream and unveiled it to the world. This social revolution has made a difference in the lives of over one billion members and in the events of nations.”
“It seems,” she says, “as if destiny brought these social revolutionaries to my house for a brief season and a great purpose. Perhaps, too, the mystique surrounding the house played a significant role in launching the global invasion of social networking and in propelling the Facebook founders to world renown. By taking a look through a window of time–a window I and many others have called Facebook House–we can listen and learn from the carriers of this grand idea, and in their lives we can find inspiration that can shape our own destinies.”

First, Do No Harm (Brier Hospital Series) by Lawrence Gold
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Medical, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Thrillers, Psychological Thrillers
I f you believe that television, movies, or medical fiction, accurately portray what it’s like to be an acute care physician or a critically ill patient in a hospital today, think again.
Dr. Joseph Polk is an intelligent, charismatic, and powerful member of the medical staff at Brier Hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. This once brilliant physician, a functional psychopath for most of his career, has decompensated.
Nurses and front-line physicians see Polk’s indifference, incompetence, and stubborn cruelty, but the medical staff and the hospital administration are willfully blind. Patients suffer, and worse.
Jack Byrnes has finally completed his training in Intensive Care Medicine and joins Brier Hospital’s medical staff.
Jack has been well trained to care for patients, but he’s woefully unprepared to deal with Joe Polk, the medical staff, enraged nurses, and the hospital’s administration.
The strength of First, Do No Harm lies in the authenticity of the medical setting and the struggles of patients and physicians. Joe Polk is a very different kind of villain.

A Pledge of Silence by Flora J. Solomon
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, War, Historical Fiction
I n January of 1941, Margie Bauer is called to active duty in the Army Nurse Corps of the United States Army Reserves, and her mother sadly laments, “You’re a capable girl, but the world’s a dangerous place.” Despite her mother’s concerns, Margie is delighted when she learns her assignment is to Sternberg Hospital in Manila, Philippines–the Pearl of the Orient. She falls in love with the beauty of the island, and the carefree lifestyle of bridge games, tennis dates, pool parties, and dancing under twinkle-light stars with handsome, young doctors. Though rumors of war circulate, she feels safe–the island is fortified, the airbases are ample, and the Filipino troops are training intensely. General MacArthur is upbeat when he announces that everything is splendid.
December 8, 1941, Japanese bombers roar into the Philippines, turning everything in their path to smoldering piles of rubble. Racing to stay ahead of the enemy, the U.S. Army evacuates to the jungles of Bataan where Margie tends to the wounded, sick, and dying soldiers in open-air field hospitals. With the Nips at her heels, she is relocated to an underground tunnel-hospital on the fortified island of Corregidor. Ultimately captured by the Japanese, she is interned in Santo Tomas, a prisoner-of-war camp.
For three years, Margie doubts her survival in the harsh environment where she faces escalating danger, starvation, and loss. Then, an airplane appears in the sky. An American airplane! “We’re here! We’re here!” she calls and waves. But, cruelly, she finds the liberation forces bring with them a danger more brutal than those of her evil oppressors.
A PLEDGE OF SILENCE is a historical novel based on the experiences of the nurses who valiantly served in the Philippines during World War II and became the first U.S. military women to be taken prisoners-of-war by a foreign enemy.

Paper Thoughts by Vanessa Lewis
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Specific Groups, Adventurers & Explorers
V anessa wrote this book to sort of stop time and give readers a personal and intimate look inside her life filled with triumphs and struggles, though her journals she kept during her teen years.
How many parents say to themselves in frustration, “I don’t know what is going on with my teenager!” or “I wish I knew what they were thinking!”
When you buy this book you will be able to:
• Read about the inner thoughts of a teen and see how life choices were made.
• Learn how battles were picked between mom and daughter.
• See how Vanessa’s mom cultivated a relationship with her, instead of listening to people around her. (Kick her out!)
• Notice how Vanessa hid what was going on in her life. There was a whole other world that was hidden out of sight.
TEENS, how many teenagers feel like they are alone and no one understands them? There are probably quite a few. Vanessa also wrote this book with them in mind so that they can:
• Relate to the struggles of what Vanessa went through in her Jr. High and High School years.
• Know that sometimes, even though problems seem definite and never ending, they really are a temporary situation. And when a situation is seen temporary, well, the dark cloud over head doesn’t seem so dark.
• And of course, how life was as a punk.
Who can read this book? Anyone really. No matter who you are, it’s overall a great read.
Parents will be able to gain knowledge on how to relate to their teen better, and teens will be able to see how life was back in the 1980′s. That problems are problems no matter what year you live in. (The 1980′s or the 2000′s.)
Vanessa didn’t intentionally write the book to be funny or comical. The way her journals were written, is the way it is in the book. Talk about some memories of relationships, romance and adventures with friends! And she is glad to be able to share them with you.
BONUS! Receive substantial information from an interview given by Vanessa’s mom at the end of the book. Find out what she did during the ups and downs of her daughters life, you don’t want to miss it.
Download the book and get to reading! Join the many other readers who have stated they couldn’t hardly put the book down once they started reading it.
All in all, it’s just a good read.
Happy Reading- And don’t forget to leave feedback at the end of the book.

Voices of the Locusts by Ron Hutchison
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Coming of Age, Teens
F rom his deathbed, 81-year-old Jack O’Brien reveals to his grandson the existence of a long-forgotten story he wrote as a teenager years earlier while living in Japan. The 16-year-old grandson finds the story in an old footlocker in his grandfather’s attic, and spends days pouring over the real-life account. Set at a U.S. military base in rural Japan in 1948, and playing out against a backdrop of swirling post-War social change, Jack’s Voices of the Locusts tells the story of three families–one black, one white, one Asian. The story also recounts Jack’s love for a Japanese girl, Fujiko Kobaysi, who has been promised in marriage by her parents to an older man. Told in vivid and sometimes haunting detail, Jack and Fujiko are frustrated in their romantic quest by story characters coming to terms (often violently) with the emotional scars of World War II. (The content of this novel depicts violence, and is recommended for mature young adults.)
