She has an ex-husband she still cares for, but who was bad for her and her ten-year-old son. Her widowed mother who lives with her is both a blessing and a trial. And, oh yes, her ex-husband has married an extremely wealthy and politically connected woman who cannot give birth. So, Maddie’s ex is filing a motion to obtain permanent custody of their son, citing the risks attendant to Maddie’s police work endanger the boy.
If that were not enough, the brother-in-law of the chief of police is using his position as an administrative assistant to sexually harass Maddie. She could file a formal complaint, but the good-old-boys network in the department is watching how she handles the situation.
Further complicating Maddie’s life is two love interests: Gary Packard, a hunk who recently moved in across the street, and Lincoln Rogers, a confirmed bachelor, who lives thousands of miles away and works for the FBI.
As the case develops Maddie learns that the victims all wore the same bra size. She must decide if this is merely a coincidence or a criterion the killer uses when selecting his victims. She also finds that each of the victims is somehow connected to the Phoenix police department. This realization isolates her further as she must pursue the killer without disclosing this theory to her department because, if her suspicion is correct, the Beholder would learn she is closing in.
As the story races toward its climax, Maddie is betrayed by those closest to her, and she begins to believe her own name may be on the killer’s list.

“ A novel that lingers long after the final page.”– Shauna Singh Baldwin, author of What the Body Remembers
Anton is turning 16 this summer of 1952, but his mother’s plans are getting in the way of his dreams. For a start, she’s sold the Packard to set up a ballet school, the Packard he was planning on learning to drive. And now she’s bought a piano and expects him to accompany her classes. But after Anton falls for the girl upstairs and then rescues his neighbour, a WWI flying ace, from a tumble, life seems suddenly rich with possibilities. That Jasmine is years older and worlds away in sophistication, and his war hero is a grumpy old man in a wheelchair being held a virtual prisoner by his daughter, are details Anton at first refuses to dwell on. But when the old man gives him a bicycle, Anton returns the favour by planning a fantastical escape to Salt Spring Island.
Anton’s tale is interwoven with his mother’s, whose story begins in 1935 when she is fourteen and filled with dreams of dancing like Isadora Duncan. Grotesquely mistreated by her alcoholic mother, Yvonne finds fleeting freedom with a Russian-born dancer but then falls prey to manipulative impresario Harold Crouch. When mother and son escape to Canada, Harold tracks them down. But then his cruelty goes too far and Yvonne finally pushes back. In one reckless moment she takes the liberating step that makes the present possible. Tent of Blue is a story of captivity and escape, of discovering the strength to fight back against the world and seize freedom.

T he Painted Darkness: A Novella
When Henry was a child, something terrible happened in the woods behind his home, something so shocking he could only express his grief by drawing pictures of what he had witnessed. Eventually Henry’s mind blocked out the bad memories, but he continued to draw, often at night by the light of the moon.
Twenty years later, Henry makes his living by painting his disturbing works of art. He loves his wife and his son and life couldn’t be better… except there’s something not quite right about the old stone farmhouse his family now calls home. There’s something strange living in the cramped cellar, in the maze of pipes that feed the ancient steam boiler.
A winter storm is brewing and soon Henry will learn the true nature of the monster waiting for him down in the darkness. He will battle this demon and, in the process, he may discover what really happened when he was a child and why, in times of trouble, he thinks: I paint against the darkness.
But will Henry learn the truth in time to avoid the terrible fate awaiting him… or will the thing in the cellar get him and his family first?
Written as both a meditation on the art of creation and as an examination of the secret fears we all share, The Painted Darkness is a terrifying look at the true cost we pay when we run from our grief–and what happens when we’re finally forced to confront the monsters we know all too well.

“The tone and building dread reminded me of classic Stephen King. Great velocity and impact, and super creepy. Don’t go in the basement!”
– Stewart O’Nan, New York Times bestselling author of The Night Country and A Prayer for the Dying
“Spooky stuff!”
– Richard Matheson, New York Times bestselling author of What Dreams May Come and I Am Legend
“Brian James Freeman’s evocative tale about the dark corners of an artist’s imagination is elegant and haunting.”

“The Painted Darkness is a dark, terrifying, and deeply moving gem of a novella. Brian James Freeman managed to both scare me and move me to tears.”
– Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Keepsake
“Wonderfully reminiscent of the quiet horror of Charles L. Grant, The Painted Darkness takes readers on a gently chilly walk through the forest of fears both conscious and subconscious. With Straubian lyricism, Brian James Freeman evokes not only the irrational terrors of childhood, but addresses the roots of creativity and the vital importance of art. A very impressive achievement.”

Sleeping Beauty: A Modern Fairy Tale by John Phythyon
Genre(s): Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths, Literature & Fiction, World Literature, Mythology
He wanted to save her. He got it all wrong.
Carl is the only one left. All Beth’s friends were sad when she fell into a coma two years ago at the age of fourteen. But life moved on, and so did they. Except Carl. He still comes to see her. He still visits two to three times a week, talking to her and hoping she will wake.
Her mother, Marie, is insane. She stares constantly through a thick haze of cigarette smoke at Carl whenever he visits Beth, watching him, evaluating, plotting.
Marie knows the truth. She knows why Beth is in that coma. She knows it was Rex, Beth’s father, who did it. She knows he hired a witch to cast a spell on her Pretty Princess until she is old enough to marry, until his hand-picked protégé wakes her with True Love’s First Kiss.
But if whomever Rex chooses can break the curse, then so can Carl. He’s loved Beth since he first met her in Sixth Grade. Marie knows. She has a plan. And maybe she’s not as crazy as everyone thinks.
First, though, she’ll have to convince Carl to believe in magic. Then she’ll have to encourage him to defy Rex. That won’t be easy. Rex hates Carl. He put Beth into that coma to keep Carl away from her. And Rex has a wicked temper.
Marie is determined, though. She’s going to get her Sleeping Beauty back. And Carl is going to help . . . whether he likes it or not.
Can True Love’s First Kiss really break the curse, or are darkness, insanity, and self-doubt too strong?
Set in modern times, “Sleeping Beauty” is a creepy reimagining of the original fairy tale. Much like ABC’s Once Upon A Time, it offers a fresh look at an old story.
It explores what happens when parents go too far to protect their children. All parents struggle deciding when to hold on tightly to their children and when to let go. Rex and Marie get it all wrong. A cautionary tale, “Sleeping Beauty” reminds us there is a fine line between love and obsession, between care and cruelty.
