A Texas sketch artist named Luke is wanted in Washington DC to design the 1876 centenary silver dollar. But broke and on the run he needs help to get there. Help comes in the form of a mulatto chef, and former sketch subject, called Abe Brown. Abe is angry at Luke for how he has been depicted, as a crude stereotype, but Luke convinces him to pay his way to Washington D.C. for a share in a prize. Together they set forth on an odyssey through Texas and the Deep South encountering, fools, seducers and a man who may help them, or may just be the devil himself.

Narrated by Abe as an old man to a writer on a train in Depression Era Georgia. Fastest Draw is both a Western and a Southern Gothic. Both picaresque and politically incorrect in its style it is reminiscent of Thomas Berger’s Little Big Man.
