The Spirit of Things – A Girl’s Journey in the Search for Truth (The Girl with the Emerald Eyes) by Karnika E. Yashwant
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Classics, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Fantasy, Fiction, Fiction Classics
A Reflection on Climate Change
As a reflection on the global aftermath of climate change, The Spirit of Life brings a compelling message to take heed about planting bad seeds that will reap a storm. Written by Bjarke Steen Rasmussen, with co-authors Anine Ross and Karnika E. Yashwant (Mr KEY), this docudrama focuses on the balance of life and death. The mission of the main characters is to save the earth from the effects of a “diminishing” sun within less than 30 hours of this realization. Without each other’s help and each one’s fortitude, the battle for earth’s redemption would be lost.
This story, although written in fiction style, is based on real events which have been occurring all over the world due to neglect and abuse of earth’s natural resources. Three youngsters and two adults from West Virginia will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions from amazement on “Forest Fire”, old flame rekindled in “Amie and Josh”, sweet young love in “A Stitch in Time”, and mystery in a cuckoo bird and dreams connecting to the past. The Spirit of Things delivers a positive figure in Heraia Lowrie, who must walk the path of desolation to complete her mission in the novel. Her wholesome, lovable and budding powers endear her to all.
The Spirit of Things is populated by people as ordinary as American Pie and pumpkins on Halloween Day. The cast of characters includes Heraia Lowrie – the girl with power over forces of nature; Manuel Pinero – Heraia’s admirer; Jose Pinero- the anti-hero and another admirer of Heraia; Joshua Bofard, a local news reporter and Amalinda Porter, Josh lady-love. The refreshing and innocent character of the heroine repeatedly collides with the selfishness and weaknesses of the two boys as they find themselves in a constant tug-of-war for Heraia.
The Fertility Rite sketch launches the mystery that unfolds to reveal a deeper meaning to all events. News events and cast of characters are juxtaposed to move as if connected by unseen threads. The Spirit of Things is not only conceived to entertain, but to serve as a lighthouse in the midst of national tragedy due to conspiracies, hurricanes and climate change. The characters show how to be a hero in as few as two steps, as they learn to trust one another.
By coincidence, Hurricane Sandy blew into town on the same month of the novel’s conception by the three authors. Such events as the torrent of rains, the flooding, lost of lives and properties were included in the book for realism and reference to actual events. A map is provided so readers can trace the events as they happen, also a scrapbook of particular events through the camera of Virginia news reporter Joshua Bofard and sketches of Jose Pinero, the refugee from San Salvador. A very precise quote that runs through all the characters and events is this double-edged quotation:
“Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. -Voltaire”
