Sliding on the Snow Stone by Andy Szpuk

I t is astonishing that anyone lived this story. It is even more astonishing that anyone survived it.
Stefan grows up in the grip of a raging famine. Stalin’s Five Year Plan brings genocide to Ukraine – millions of people starve to death. To free themselves from the daily terrors of Soviet rule, Stefan and his friends fight imaginary battles in nearby woods to defend their land. The games they play are their only escape.
‘Sliding on the Snow Stone’ is the true story of Stefan’s extraordinary journey across a landscape of hunger, fear and devastating loss. With Europe on the brink of World War Two, Stefan and his family pray they’ll survive in their uncertain world. They long to be free.
(In 1932-33, as part of their drive towards industrialisation, the Soviet Union demanded impossibly high requisitions of grain from rural areas in Ukraine. In a deliberate act of genocide, Ukrainian smallholdings were stripped of food, and the population began to perish, with some estimates as high as 10 million deaths, from starvation. In Ukraine, this atrocity became known as the Holodomor (death by hunger). The following years saw Soviet purges and terrors resulting in the elimination of academics and intellectuals, or of anyone who spoke out against Soviet rule. When World War Two arrived on Ukraine’s doorstep, many people viewed the Nazis as liberators – a view that was quickly proved wrong. ‘Sliding on the Snow Stone’ is Stefan’s personal account of a historical period drenched in the blood of a nation, and of his yearning for freedom).

S et in the era of the Vietnam War, this is a love story between a young man and woman caught up in the throes of that era. CLAY STONER: born and raised in the Ozarks, Annapolis graduate, navy pilot, a fun loving jet jockey – until he learns he is going to have to bomb real people. MARIANNA HAIZET:
daughter from a renowned Swiss banking family, sheltered in boarding schools while pusuing her music studies, and recovering from a shattering experience after having known little joy in her life – until she meets Clay.
OUR COUPLE meet by chance in Nice during a Bastille Day weekend, and when they part neither imagines their lives will ever cross again. They are from two different worlds. But fate intervenes and they do meet again – and connect – and despite repreated vows of “no commitments” she becomes immersed in his world of rowdy parties and the tension and torment surround- ing young women and their pilots waiting to go off to war. They stumble into a quixotic love affair that each believes is hopeless.
Little do they know that their destiny is to be caught up in an international intrigue that will lead from the South of France through Switzerland and all the way back to the Ozarks, or that she will become a singing star, or that as a couple their names will become famous and indelibly linked to one of the greatest scandals of all time.
The questions raised throughout are simple…what is love…can ideals triumph in a world of compromise?

A Pandora’s Children Single
I have decided to pull five of my favorite stories from my Pandora’s Children collection and release them as $.99 standalone stories.
In “Wood Chipper Blues”, a dentist is forced to consider whether or not one of his patients is a murderer after the police come to his door one night carrying the molar of a dead man. (4,800 words)
Please note that this story has been previously published in Pandora’s Children: Dark Interludes ($1.99) and Pandora’s Children: The Complete Nightmares Book 1($2.99), so if you have read either of those, don’t bother with this. But if you haven’t delved into the Pandora’s Children books yet, and don’t want to spend more than $.99, this is a good place to start.
