Pandora’s Bottle by Joanne Sydney Lessner
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, Literary, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
W hat happens when you pin all your hopes on a single event and it all goes terribly wrong? When that event is the uncorking of a fabled bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite once owned by Thomas Jefferson, the repercussions are emotional, financial, theatrical and, in every way, unexpected. In this tale of hubris and redemption, aspiration and perseverance, first-time novelist Joanne Sydney Lessner provides a provocative glimpse into the world of fine wine, from the whirl of New York City haute cuisine to the historic vineyards of the Hudson Valley. When Sy Hampton purchases this legendary bottle which, through a quirk of preservation, may yet be drinkable he shocks the wine community by choosing to uncork it privately with a female companion, rather than at a special public event. Sy intends the evening to be a quiet reassertion of his virility in the throes of middle age, but for ambitious restaurateur Annette Lecocq, the event offers an irresistible opportunity for much-needed publicity. Their competing agendas are not the only things to collide on the fateful night. Caught in the crossfire are Tripp Macgregor, a waiter on the verge of his long-awaited Broadway debut, and Valentina D Ambrosio, the beautiful but unworldly working girl from Brooklyn Sy hopes to impress.

S ergeant David Wolf has put his Special Forces days long behind him, settling down as a cop in the small ski resort town of Rocky Points, Colorado. He’s a good cop who’s seen bad days before, but none quite like this.
As if narrowly escaping an attempt on his life, his addict ex-wife being back in the picture, and complications to his all-but-certain appointment to Sheriff weren’t enough, he’s just received word that his traveling blogger brother has committed suicide in the Alps of Italy.
Devastation and resentment over his only sibling’s selfish act quickly gives way to a nagging suspicion that he isn’t getting the whole truth. Conviction of his brother’s character is enough to pull Wolf from his pressing situation at home to the entirely foreign land of Northern Italy — into a more dangerous and volatile turn of events than he could have possibly imagined.
With the help of a beautiful young officer of the Caribinieri, Wolf must piece together what happened on that last fateful night of his brother’s life without ruffling too many feathers, or paying the ultimate price.
A gritty tale of international mystery, Foreign Deceit is a cerebral, visceral and emotional ride that will keep you guessing until the final pages.

DEADLY MEMORIES – What she can’t remember might kill her…
_______________________________________________________
“She doesn’t remember a thing,” Rolph snapped into the phone.
Andrea froze. His back was turned away from her. He didn’t know she was there, listening.
“It’s been six months, for God’s sake. If you harm one hair on her head, I’ll contact the authorities. My father would be disgraced, but that will not deter me.”
Now Andrea couldn’t move. There was no doubt Rolph was talking about her. She wondered how his father, the French Ambassador, could be disgraced.
His voice modulated to a threatening whisper. “This is the end. Otherwise she goes directly into protective custody, and I spill my guts. You’ve lied to me, made me into a damned traitor, and I’m angry enough to do it out of spite.”
Now Andrea knew there were secrets he was keeping from her. What did he mean about protective custody? Was she in danger? The one blank spot in her mind was a mysterious car crash. She didn’t know how she had landed at the bottom of a cliff in the Santa Monica mountains of Los Angeles. She remembered the fabulous party in Beverly Hills that night, but try as she might, she couldn’t remember the sequence of events leading to the accident.
Rolph’s last words chilled her, “I have nothing to lose. I’m a dead man.”

He’s hauled in for questioning, but to no avail: this is one crime Blake didn’t commit. Yet the interrogation is enough to shake up his paranoid world. He realizes that, instead of hiding from the ills of the world, he should be fighting them. So begins Blake’s quest to score the unlikeliest of jobs for a guy like him: becoming a copper in Mangel. Considering his violent past, everyone–cops, criminals, even his ex-girlfriend–tries to dissuade him. But Blake’s a tenacious bloke, and what better way to convince the naysayers of his crime-fighting skills than to catch the butcher plaguing his town? As per usual, nothing goes according to plan in Blake’s attempt to turn over a new leaf, leaving him to slog through plenty of blood and muck in the deliciously suspenseful fourth instalment of Charlie Williams’s darkly comic series.

“This story will appeal greatly to both boys and girls of the 12-21 age range, and even adults like myself will enjoy it. It is a young adult novel, so be sure to know it is crafted in a way as if you are reading it as a 17-year-old girl. The love story was beautiful and indicative of what every girl goes through in her teenage years. The only difference, however, is that she is in love with a vampire. Most of us don’t experience that!” – Reviewer

“…reminds me of Le Guin, of Cecelia Holland, and something of Rosemary Sutcliff… It made me feel as I did when I was a child reading authors like those… Once again I was in a magical place…”

“…there’s no ring of power or glowing sword of specialness; the magic, like the tone of the book, is quiet. It feels real.”
–from a blog review on livejournal
When she was a child, the author of When Women Were Warriors happily identified with all the male heroes she read about in stories that began, “Once upon a time, a young man went out to seek his fortune.” But she would have been delighted to discover even one story like that with a female protagonist. Since she never did find the story she was looking for all those years ago, she decided to write it.
In Book I of the trilogy, Tamras arrives in Merin’s house to begin her apprenticeship as a warrior, but her small stature causes many, including Tamras herself, to doubt that she will ever become a competent swordswoman. To make matters worse, the Lady Merin assigns her the position of companion, little more than a personal servant, to a woman who came to Merin’s house, seemingly out of nowhere, the previous winter, and this stranger wants nothing to do with Tamras.
“…Both men and women of all persuasions seem to love these books… Very rare. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!”

A lex was Ian’s five-year-old son: brilliant, earnest, and compassionate.
He is dead now, but Ian can’t let him go.
When his wife urges him to move on, he drives her away. His performance
at work collapses; his friends leave him. Six months later, alone in an empty
house, Ian starts to see his son again.
Every vision is a repeat of something the boy said or did in life: aching memories
replaying themselves for Ian’s eyes alone. Are these images of Alex real?
Has Ian’s son found a way back, to forgive or condemn his father?
Or has Ian’s sorrow metastasized into psychosis?
With a masterful hand, bestselling Kindle Horror author Adam J Nicolai paints a
picture of grief, madness, and the furious strength of a father’s love for his
son.
Amazon readers are saying:
“Mr. Nicolai maintains a sense of creeping disquiet and uncertainty throughout the narrative; I was unsure whether Ian was haunted by his son or slowly going crazy until the last few pages of the novel.”
- Uncle Progress – 5 stars
“I … found myself marveling at how well-crafted many sentences are. I would find myself stopping and re-reading them, just so I could savor their beauty a little longer.”
- Basil Owen – 5 stars
“Mr. Nicolai uses language beautifully. He paints very vivid images in very few words and he does so brilliantly.” – Tifainé N. Highly – 5 stars
“Mr. Nicolai’s brutally straightforward prose and clear love for his characters… combine into something vital and hungry (like the early works of – dare I speak his name? – Stephen King).”
- Ryan J. Holthaus – 5 stars
“[O]ften it is easy to see why any given writer had to self publish (and often seemingly without any editor). That is definitely not the case here. The writing was intense, compelling and intelligent.”
- Beth C – 4 stars

- Jason Plowman – 5 stars
“For anyone who has been near people in the depths of horrific and insatiable grief, Ian’s hundred mile an hour flight into emotional and physical self-destruction rings true.”

In Victorian London’s cesspool of crime and disease, a series of murders remains undiscovered until a cholera victim is found floating in the city’s drinking water supply. Dr Anton Kronberg, England’s best bacteriologist, is called upon to investigate and finds evidence of abduction and medical maltreatment. While Scotland Yard has little interest in pursuing the case, Kronberg pushes on and crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes. The detective immediately discovers Kronberg’s secret – a woman masquerading as a man in order to practice medicine – a criminal deed that could land her in prison for years to come. But both must join forces to stop a crime so monstrous, it outshines Jack the Ripper’s deeds in brutality and cold-bloodedness.

He is something of a kite, buffeted by circumstances which blow him not only through personal crises, but also through some of the most significant events of the late 1800s, including the railroad riots of 1877, the creation of the Homestead Steel Works, the assassination of President Garfield, and the Johnstown Flood. Over time, and with the help of his muse, who dances maddeningly just beyond his reach, he takes control of his life, wresting it from the winds attempting to control him.

Gardening for Seniors – Joyous Activities for Elderly Gardeners with Tips for Reduced Mobility by Andrea Kalli
Genre(s): Crafts, Hobbies & Home, Gardening & Landscape Design, Reference, Education & Reference, Health Fitness & Dieting, Personal Health, Healthy Living, Advice & How-to, Health Mind & Body, Lifestyle & Home, Home & Garden, Gardening & Horticulture
I n “Gardening for Seniors – Joyous Activities for Elderly Gardeners, with Tips for Reduced Mobility” you’ll find a wide range of information that will inspire you to continue, or start, gardening.
If you’re looking for an activity you can share with an aging loved one, gardening offers the ideal opportunity to do something satisfying and fun together. Bring your children into the fun and you have a wonderful full-family activity where all of you can share in the tending and the enjoyment of what your plants produce.
The Joys and Benefits of Gardening
Whether it’s something you grew up with, or something that is relatively new to you, you’ll come to discover the joy that gardening brings and the benefits it offers, both physically and mentally. This is particularly true as you get older.
There’s something to be said for planting a seedling or young plant, nurturing it along and watching it grow, then enjoying the benefits of what it produces, such as flowers or vegetables. You will watch birds and butterflies enjoying your flowers. You will add fresh vegetables and herbs to your meals. There’s a whole circle-of-life thing that happens.
It simplifies part of your life and brings things back to basics, which is more important than ever in these times of multitasking, 24/7 internet connection, and 800 channels on the television. A garden is where you can find peace and a sense of purpose. It’s the perfect hobby to help you unplug, unwind, and enjoy.
A garden is a place that reassures. It helps you to feel grounded. It soothes and offers a connection to the earth. This is true even if all you have is a handful of containers or a 4×4 foot raised bed.
Gardening is a great way to maintain flexibility and muscle tone. Doing work around the garden is typically more rewarding, both emotionally and mentally, than other forms of exercise. If you’re physically able to tend to a garden, you’ll find that your metabolism can increase at a rate of three to five times, burning calories along the way. It is said that regular activity for around 30 minutes a day is beneficial for your health and for your sleep, which can easily be accomplished with the addition of common gardening activities like watering, feeding, digging, planting, and weeding to your daily routine.
Gardening can become part of a rehabilitation program. Horticulture therapy has both mental and physical restorative effects. Gardening can benefit those who are recovering from physical illness by retraining muscles and improving coordination and strength.
So, whether you’re looking for more “me” time, or an activity where the whole family can participate and benefit from, gardening can be exactly what you need it to be.
Topics range from the basics of container gardening, how to enjoy gardening with your grandchildren, easy vegetable gardening, and how to enjoy gardening from a wheelchair.
Some senior or elderly gardeners find themselves faced with reduced mobility. Let’s face it, as we get older we may find that we’re not able to do all the hobbies, sports, and energetic activities that we’ve been able to enjoy during our 20′s, 30′s, 40′s, and 50′s. Gardening doesn’t have to be one of them. As a matter of fact, it’s quite therapeutic and satisfying.

Puritan’s Empire by Charles Coulombe
Genre(s): Christian Books & Bibles, Catholicism, Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
A Catholic Perspective on American History.
History is the key to understanding men-whether as nations, families, or individuals. For Catholics, history has an even higher purpose beside. For them, history is the unfolding of God’s Will in time, and the attempts of men either to conform themselves to or to resist that Will. But American Catholic historians have generally refrained from exploring their own national history with these principles, preferring instead to adopt the analysis of their non-Catholic colleagues, save when looking at purely Catholic topics (and sometimes not then). It is vital then, for Catholics, especially young Catholics, to have a good and proper understanding of their country’s history. To exercise their patriotism, they must work for the conversion of the United States; to do this effectively, they must understand the forces and events which brought forth not only the religion of Americanism and the country itself, but also the sort of Catholicism which, in 300 years, failed so dismally to bring this conversion about. This book attempts to reinterpret the better known episodes of our history in accordance with the Faith, and to point up lesser-known details which will give factual proof of the truth of this reinterpretation.

D o you ever get one of those moments when you want to lose yourself in a book that is totally magical, brimming with imagination and fantasy, and entertaining from start to finish? This book by the very talented Jonathan Gould is the very thing that delivers on all counts.

Jonathan Gould is a master at “Adult Fables”…Turning his talents to a full length novel – Magnus Opum – Gould creates an even richer world and experience…
- reviewmybookonamazon.wordpress.com
Magnus Opum is an epic fantasy that’s slightly skewed – Tolkien with a twist.
Magnus Opum is a wonderful story – there’s no doubt about that. Magnus has a quest and he embraces it fully, it takes him to new places and he encounters new races during his adventures. However, it’s the things that Magnus learns that really make this story shine for me.
- bookbagsandcatnaps.com
It takes a quiet approach to its storytelling, but also regales the reader with a frothy sprinkling of satire and wit.
- afstewartblog.blogspot.ca
At the end of the day, the story of Magnus Mandalora of the small homely village of Lower Kertoob is fun, funny, educational, and a master work of both parody AND satire rolled into an easy-to-read family-friendly story.

Eyes Behind Belligerence by K.P. Kollenborn
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, War, Historical Fiction
“ When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends.” Culminating a bitter-sweet epic and traditional coming-of-age story, ‘Eyes Behind Belligerence’ sets precedence to fear and hatred, to families torn apart, and to the calloused response of internment camps. While two Japanese-American families endure the wake of Pearl Harbor’s wrath, each member must face the most painful question of their life: Where does their loyalty stand?
Told in five parts, this novel unravels the challenges between two unlikely Nisei friends, Jim and Russell, into adulthood during the Second World War. As restrictions are imposed, (even in the safe, rural community of Bainbridge Island,) as harassments escalate, (including the F.B.I. invading their homes and deporting their fathers to Montana for espionage trials,) the fated day arrives: evacuation of all Japanese civilians. Rounded up like cattle, tagged, they are hauled to the fringes of Death Valley: Manzanar. Together they must survive racism, gang violence, and the harsh elements of the environment. Together they must prove their loyalty, especially after a tragic riot on the eve of Pearl Harbor’s anniversary. While Russell enlists in a segregated army, becoming part of one the most decorated units in U.S. history, Jim is sent to a different camp for the “No-No” boys: those who are marked disloyal. Removed from their families, they are forced to reevaluate their identities and discover, most importantly, what it means to forgive.

Humorous Lines and Clever Interjections for Contemporary Flirting by Upward
Genre(s): Health Fitness & Dieting, Relationships, Interpersonal Relations, Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Jokes & Riddles, Self-Help & Psychology, Advice & How-to, Health Mind & Body, Mate Seeking
A fter so many years of social interaction you have common sayings you gravitate to quite often. You have your “can’t argue with that” line. Your “you need to get out more” line. Your “I call it like I see it” line. You find no reason in brushing up on your humor when “that’s what she said” interjections win over social circles just fine. Performing a stand-up routine is not something on your list of things to try this year and you are kind of past the “I’m going to be overly outgoing” shtick, yet the charming nature of being quick-witted is something you and the rest of us still find appealing.
In comes a collection of a couple hundred phrases and words that is not exactly a how-to book. In fact it was never meant to be a book at all. Years ago, a very good looking young gentleman, going by the pseudonym Upward, started noting remarks he found inherently playful and somewhat common in conversation for only his personal use, until recently when he decided to pack them up, add examples, and share them with the self-improving public. They are phrases to laugh at. Most of them you will recognize. Now you will have the lines in your metaphorical back pocket to nonchalantly pull out when needed. In essence, a manual to ease your l’esprit de l’escalier. Socially potent fire, if you will.
Can Money Buy Happiness? Ten case studies with five different conclusions – you be the judge! by Cal Andrews
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Leaders & Notable People, Rich & Famous, Politics & Social Sciences, Sociology, Class
W ealthy individuals are often quoted as saying, “Money isn’t everything.” Those of us who are less fortunate think it sure would be nice to have all our financial problems solved, so we can focus on the rest of that “everything.” Having a lot of money does seem to result in a whole new set of problems, however – ones which many of us would welcome.
In this text, Cal Andrews attempts to settle the matter of whether or not money is capable of purchasing happiness. The lives of ten men who acquired fortunes are examined, with a focus on how they felt about their wealth and in what ways it changed them – Men such as Kurt Cobain, Howard Stern, Andrew Carnegie, Jesse Livermore, and Ted turner. These ten guys are each quite unique, having different worldviews and coming from different social backgrounds.
The author draws a remarkable conclusion from these case studies. From it, he derives a formula for managing wealth in a manner which will keep a person free from the problems which many have experienced from becoming rich. Ignore this formula at your own peril.
