The First Dragoneer (Introductory Novella) (The Dragoneers Saga) by M.R. Mathias
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Action & Adventure, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Fantasy, Anthologies, Epic, World Literature, Mythology, Anthologies & Short Stories, Fairy Tales, Sword & Sorcery
T he First Dragoneer is an intro to the Dragoneer Saga. I wrote it in 2009, before I could consider myself a writer. The characters are young, but the story wasn’t written to be YA. Many reviewers believe it, and the rest of the Dragoneer Saga, is. In fantasy, I don’t really think it matters all that much. The Royal Dragoneers, the first full length novel in the series, is just 2.99 for a limited time.
If you like dragons, action, and adventure, you may enjoy these books. I definately enjoyed bringing them to fruition.
Hold on to your dragon! – M. R. Mathias The First DragoneerWhen two young men go on a hunt that they know will probably be the last hunt of their youth, they decide they want it to be an unforgettable outting. When they cross a ridge and leave the unprotected, unpatrolled boundary of their kingdom, they find a cavern that looks like it needs to be explored. Inside the cavern they find exactly what they were looking for. For residing in the darkened depths of this stoney hole is something that they will never forget…… That is, if they live long enough to remember it!Snippet: His words abruptly stopped as a new sound carried toward them. It was a snort, a loud one. It was accompanied by the sound of rattling branches. Brendly instantly went back into firing position; alert, prone and ready. March gave his nose a last second scratch as put his arrow to the string. The soft sound of Bren’s excited breathing was the last sound he heard before tuning the world out so that he could focus on the tree line. First it was a small doe, a yearling, March thought. Two fawns, and another larger doe appeared. With nervous darting eyes, the biggest of the four deer lowered its head and began to drink. Slowly the others followed. March was thrilled. He hoped that Bren would be patient. A buck was sure to present itself eventually. Bren almost loosed his arrow on the larger doe, but at the last second thought better of it. He wanted a buck to show off to his dad, but his restraint was mostly due to the two awkward moving young fawns frolicking near their mother. Suddenly, all four of the deer rose from the pool and froze in alarm. In a flash of movement, a big cracking sound erupted from behind them. They were off in a series of leaping bounds that carried them instantly out of sight and back into the forest. Here he comes, March thought. He expected a wide heavy rack of antlers to emerge from the trees, announcing the leader of the herd. Instead, the creature that showed itself nearly stopped his heart. As silently as he could, Brendly took in a deep breath as the magnificent beast stepped out of the tree line. Cautiously, yet with an air of arrogance, it moved into the clearing and looked around. It was the white stag…The Saga of the Dragoneers:

Ghetto Medic: A Father in the ‘Hood by Rachel Hennick
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Historical, Memoirs
G hetto Medic: A Father in the ‘Hood is the remarkable true story of the life of Bill Hennick, a firefighter and paramedic in Baltimore, Maryland, a city which today boasts the busiest fire stations in the United States. The story begins in 1945, when Bill, aged four, is badly burned in a terrible fire started by an older child playing with matches. When he reaches adulthood, he begins searching for his purpose in life and identifies fire as ”the enemy.” He joins the still-segregated Baltimore City Fire Department at the height of the civil rights movement, witnesses the race riots of 1968 which followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, and battles the ensuing infernos.
When the upper and middle classes abandon the city, Bill sees a ”wasteland” and develops empathy for those people left behind. He tries to make a difference by becoming a paramedic, a service then in its infancy. His story is set against the history of Baltimore, known for its rich black heritage, the home of jazz legends such as Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway. He embarks on a spiritual journey as he risks his own life in caring for the poorest of the poor in a city with one of the world’s highest crime rates.
In this poignant biographical memoir about her father, Rachel Hennick tells a dramatic American story with vibrant characters, pathos and a twist of humor. Ghetto Medic penetrates the heart with a thought-provoking and universal message about the enduring power of compassion.
- “Ghetto Medic is a strong addition to any memoir or everyday person biography collection.” – Midwest Book Review
- “A wonderful debut.” The Examiner
- “If H. L. Mencken were here he would say, ‘go out immediately and buy a copy of Ghetto Medic,’ for nobody knew more than Mencken about story telling, language refinement, or the city of Baltimore . . . - “Bill Hennick is an unsung hero in the history of Baltimore and in the battle against racism and segregation in the South . . . [A] remarkable story . . . vividly told.”–Lee Gutkind, Author and Editor, Creative Nonfiction Magazine
- “A beautifully written, instantly captivating account of one man’s unfaltering dedication to helping those in need.”–Craig Jurisevic, author of the Australian bestseller Blood on my Hands (soon to become a film produced by Academy Award winner Eva Orner)

My Prison Without Bars: The Journey of a Damaged Woman to Someplace Normal by Taylor Fulks
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Chick-Lit, Domestic Life, Parenting & Relationships, Family Relationships, Child Abuse, Fiction, Genre Fiction, Family Life, Dysfunctional Relationships
S ometimes the strongest manacles in this life are the bonds forged from painful memories of a past so horrific, that they shackle and incarcerate the very essence of one’s soul…inevitably, the constraint is a life sentence.
It’s storming outside–I’m talkin’ the kind of storm that produces the little red stripe at the bottom of the TV, flashing warnings of impending doom and destruction on a scale of Armageddon. Yet, aside from the frequent bomb blasts of thunder and techno-flashes of lightning, my hotel room is eerily quiet–almost deafeningly so. I lay prostrate on one of the two queen-size beds, arms and hands paralyzed from being trapped under my limp, heavy carcass, hypnotized and mesmerized by the slow seepage of blood spreading into the fibers of the duvet…it’s my blood. This fact does not alarm me–yet, which that, in and of itself, tells me that all my pistons aren’t firing correctly. My vision is impaired by half…meaning my right eye is swollen shut, and I don’t really remember why or how it got that way at the moment. I am, on the other hand, well aware of the difficulty I’m having drawing a deep breath. With what little strength I have–God, my whole body hurts–I shift to my back and gasp! My clothes are torn and mutilated, draped across me in shreds like curtains in an old abandoned house–weathered and forgotten. For a moment that seems to stretch on forever, I am numb, taking in the macabre scenery that is my body–bites and bruises, blood and scratches, a hand-print on my hip, and a…Christ, what did he do to my breast? My brain begins to come back online, circuits flying through my head, some firing at random (work conference, restaurant, too much wine, storm…) while others are more concrete ( walking alone, man in the corridor by the stairwell, tied to the bed, hands on my throat…hands on me). Then the dream–my whole life in Technicolor flashing before my eyes. Was it a dream, or reality? Oh God…I’m either dead, or I will be soon. And what about the man? It’s all becoming clearer now as my brain begins to re-boot. A ghost from my past–the bogey man, Frankenstein, and the monster from under my bed all rolled into my living, breathing, nightmare. Where is he? Did I kill him? Is he still in this room? Futilely, I try to rise up from the bed–oh God, I’m gonna be sick–then I think better of it. Surely he’s gone now. There’s no one in the room but me. I’m trying diligently to convince myself of this before full out hysterics kicks in. I carefully still my aching head, my single eye heavy with weariness and fatigue, scans the shadows on the walls and ceiling as they dance with the strobe beat of the lightning. I just need to rest for a minute, just a minute, then I’ll have the strength to get up and call the police. Darkness surrounds me like a warm blanket in winter. My body is stiff and still as though the bed has been poured around me. The pain in my head and body has changed from a nauseating throb to a dull ache all over. I feel my whole body begin to succumb to sleep, the soothing abyss just waiting for me to fall over the edge into nothingness–that’s when I feel the mattress dip violently and the vise-like hand grip my throat. This is going to get ugly.
