Author’s Note: This novel is a new version of Shades of Gray with a Happily-Ever-After ending.

Inspired by love of country and guided by a sense of duty and honor, Hunter must make a desperate choice when he discovers the woman he promised his dying brother he would protect is the Union spy he vowed to his men he would destroy.
Readers will discover the fine line between friends and enemies when the paths of these two tenacious foes cross by the fates of war and their destinies become entwined forever.

Showcase Book – Race to Splendor
showcase book
“ Blindly, she inched along a floor pitching as violently as the deck of a boat in a midwinter storm. Her hands touched the threshold opening onto the ninth floor foyer at the instant the glass transom over her head exploded into a thousand pieces. Reflexively, Amelia cast her right arm in front of her face, but not before blood spurted from her scalp and ran down her checks. She crumpled beneath the doorframe, curling into a ball. Amelia screamed again as a twenty-five-foot expanse of wood paneling and masonry pitched outward and plunged nine stories to Montgomery Street below. She knew that no structure on landfill, no matter how well built, could withstand much more shaking without collapsing.
Then, just as suddenly, the convulsions subsided.”
Early in 1906, the ground in San Francisco shook buildings and lives from their comfortable foundations.
Amidst rubble, corruption, and deceit, two women-young architects in a city and field ruled by men-find themselves racing the clock and each other during the rebuilding of competing hotels in the City by the Bay.
Based on meticulous research, A Race to Splendor tells the story of the audacious people of one of the world’s great cities rebuilding and reinventing themselves after immense human tragedy. Filled with courage, passion, and conflict, Amelia Bradshaw’s spirit will capture your imagination as she strives to redraft her life amidst the ruins with both help and hindrance from a wayward son of privilege who pulls her into worlds she’d never have known.
“Richly drawn characters…will keep you turning these pages!”
-Michael Llewellyn, author of Twelfth Night
Reviews
Ware’s trailblazing woman is a feisty host for an affecting story of the struggle to rise above the wreckage of mankind.
Meticulously researched, this richly detailed novel, whose earthquake scenes are so real that readers will believe they are witnessing the event, will enthrall… an unforgettable story. 4 1/2 Stars
A Race to Splendor is a penetrating look at what it takes to survive and what it means to succeed in a city that has literally crumbled. Greed and envy, anger and rage, love and lust all make an appearance in this fascinating exploration of human nature. The intriguing, dedicated personalities in Ware’s latest release provide an excellent source of information about the San Francisco tragedy as well as captivating entertainment.
“Vividly evocative of the time and place, Ware’s first novel in ten years deftly blends history and romance in a page-turning story. From her gripping descriptions of the earthquake and its aftermath to the interplay between the protagonists, this is another winner from an excellent wordsmith.”
For me, the story itself was a winner. I also thoroughly enjoyed reading the author’s note and her acknowledgements as they were filled with expressions of her inspiration for this story and the historical research she did that brought about A Race to Splendor, which I think is an ode to courageous and extraordinary women who have contributed greatly to history but have largely been ignored.
Ciji Ware continues to shine a spotlight on women’s accomplishments in history. Highly recommended, this novel glows with a careful blend of history and romance
Her writing is pleasant and it’s clearly evident that she’s done her homework.
I could barely put A Race to Splendor down once I would pick it up to start reading. The story moved effortlessly with amazing detail. No doubt explicitly researched, A Race to Splendor was a top notch novel that showed the aftermath of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 through the eyes of a determined woman.
I really enjoyed “A Race to Splendor.” Ciji Ware is an incredible writer, and her research is flawless. If you enjoy historical fiction, you will enjoy this one.
I found the writing to be very believable that I could relate to the damage that this earthquake had done to property and people in San Francisco.
A Race to Splendor is fast paced, meticulously detailed, events come to life as do the characters, and Ware sweeps the reader away with her ability to transform readers into the past. I highly recommend A Race to Splendor to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or is new to the genre.
My first Ciji Ware novel but definitely not my last; the pages literally turn themselves!
Ware’s research is impeccable and she brings these situations and circumstances to life for readers. She gives a face to a tragedy that many don’t know much about and I thought she did a wonderful job of it.
A Race to Splendor is pitch perfect! While it is a hefty book, at no time does the storyline drag or feel forced. I immensely enjoyed watching Amelia and J.D.’s relationship shift and grow and to see how my opinions of each of the characters, both prominent and secondary, changed as more information was revealed.
A Race to Splendor brings to light many social issues, such as women’s rights and the rights of the Chinese immigrants forced into servitude at the turn of the 20th century, while also promoting how everyone has the chance to change, even those most likely not to. If you enjoy historical fiction, you won’t be disappointed with this gem.
This is a book that I would recommend to fans of historical fiction, and to the rest of you too. It has romance, suspense, and backstabbing.
I loved A Race to Splendor. Ciji Ware’s storytelling was fantastic. Just when you think things are going well, a new wrench gets thrown into the mix. I read this book pretty quickly as I was always wondering what would happen next. The earthquake and fire description were riveting. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies, San Francisco starring Clark Gable.
Ciji Ware’s A Race to Splendor can not be missed! What an epic novel full of heart thumping action, suspense, drama and romance! It contains perfect elements of history to awaken our dormant interest into past events long forgotten. Ware succeeds in grabbing our attention from the moment we learn of her inspiration in the Author’s Note to the prologue with Amelia’s beseechingly sad letter to Julia Morgan. Chapter One explodes with Amelia’s own determination to vex the men of their claim to the Bay View Hotel.
Ciji Ware is acknowledged as one of the best historical fiction authors, and she does not disappoint in A Race to Splendor. Meticulously researched, she transports the reader to turn of the century San Francisco and makes them feel the devastation and the pioneering spirit that rebuilt the city.
Another big thumbs up to Ms. Ware for writing well-rounded baddies and showing us why they’re bad instead of telling us with snarling lips, stinking breath and feral smiles.
A Race to Splendor is an entertaining summer read.

CURLY BILL AND RINGO
Why did the legendary gunfighter, Ringo, come to Boot Hill? Rumors and innuendo ignite the small frontier town.
Did the wealthy rancher, Willy Gibson, hire him to combat the cattle rustlers? Was he here to even up some old grudges? Or to hunt down the men who tried to kill him?
Miss Sarah, the most beautiful woman in town, seemed in a much different mood after he checked in at the hotel where she worked.
Curly Bill knew who he was, or thought he should, since they rode together for a time. Curly also remembered that around Ringo, you always watched for signs of trouble, if you were smart.
“Would you mind telling me why you’re in Boot Hill, when you’re supposed to be in hell?” Curly asks.
Ringo glanced at him out of those cold clear blue eyes. “I came back,” he said quietly. “I got lonesome down there. Kept thinking about some fellows I should have taken with me.”

P raise for Andy Smithson: Blast of the Dragon’s Fury (Book One)
“I LOVED it! Totally hooked and want to hear more. When’s the sequel coming out?” – Book Reviewer
“As far as Andy Smithson knows, he is a more-or-less ordinary 10-year-old boy, neglected by his overachieving parents and annoyed by his pampered older sister. What he doesn’t know is that he is also the latest in a line of rulers of the land of Oomaldee and the one destined to save that kingdom from a curse put on it 500 years before Andy’s birth. Andy is magically pulled into Oomaldee while washing dishes one evening, and the adventure begins–an adventure that includes fire-breathing dragons, a lisping wizard, flying horses, people-eating giants, and many new and delightful friends.
The story has plenty of exciting moments and a great deal of humor, from fart jokes and silly wordplay to more subtle humor that should appeal to adult readers. Delightful characters, exciting moments, and plenty of cool extras.” – SP Reviews
“The humor is visible and the book has many clever touches. The characters are believable… in this multi-layered story. A well-thought-through plot and vivid characters and situations.”

Zen and Sex (a Romantic Comedy) by Dermot Davis
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Love, Sex & Marriage, Literature & Fiction
M artin is a 24 year old guy who falls in love with a 38 year old woman. He has to grow so fast emotionally that he feels like he just got hit by a speeding bus.Not only is Frances fourteen years Martin’s senior, but she’s all about putting Zen into relationship, which involves every guy’s worst nightmare: talking about your feelings, being conscious of your thoughts and above all, unabashed, honest communication at all times. Martin has no idea what he is getting himself into and the sharp learning curve that’s required of him especially when he’s in the mood for sex and she wants Zen.”This is a short book but contains multitudes. The hero, Martin, is in despair about his ability to maintain a long-term relationship. After a number of failed match-making attempts he finally falls into a relationship with an older woman. At first leery, he realises that the age-gap doesn’t matter and goes headlong into the relationship. The book examines what happens when two real people try to negotiate a relationship where each is uncertain about themselves and their feelings. Dermot Davis writes Martin from the first-person perspective, and this gives him the opportunity to delve the depths and scale the heights of Martin’s roller-coaster. He writes affectionately and – it seems to me – accurately about the mental contortions that ‘real’ people go through as they work on their relationships. I’d recommend this book to anyone who’s experienced failure and success in their romantic life. You’ll recognise your feelings and the feelings of other people as they’re acted out. You’ll experience the frustration of dealing with a partner who seems to change his or her mind about how he or she feels. And you’ll laugh copiously at Martin’s attempts to find a way of having a real relationship with a real woman without giving up any essential parts of his own persona.” – Keith Dixon, author

Until the dispute is settled he learns his trade in Kings Lynn and London. All the Roads That Lead From Home by Anne Leigh Parrish
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Short Stories, Single Author, Chick-Lit, Contemporary Women, Contemporary Fiction
“ Anne Leigh Parrish has written a collection of stories that deserve a place on the shelf next to Raymond Carver, Tom Boyle, Richard Bausch, and other investigators of lives gone wrong. Parrish writes with painful clarity about marriages turned sour, children at war with their parents, women drifting from one damaging relationship to another, and about unexpected acts of generosity-an impoverished woman giving her battered piano to a priest who had befriended her, a schoolgirl who bribes a boy to pretend an interest in an overweight classmate, then finds that her kindness has disastrous consequences. These are potent and artful stories, from a writer who warrants attentive reading.” – C. Michael Curtis, Fiction Editor, The Atlantic Monthly

K aila Guidry has always known she is different. After all, her mother insists she hide her hair under a tin foil shield and a wig before leaving the house. When Kaila meets Jordyn Stryker one day at school, she begins to understand the origin of her mother’s seemingly irrational fears.
Jordyn Stryker was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent undercover to Louisina’s Bush High to learn human ways. When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn steps in and awakens her to a new reality, and to love. Out of loyalty to him, Kaila looks the other way when the real purposes of the starseed begin to unfold.
As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves forward, Kaila and Jordyn, caught in an impossible love, must face who they really are and decide where their true loyalties lie.
“I will gladly give this story 5 stars. It isn’t often that I find a new twist on the old sci fi, but Gruder has managed to give it a unique perspective.” –Recent Reads
“Kaila was very relateable to me, she loved her family but longed to know a sense of normalcy.” –Fun With Books
“Liz Gruder created in her protagonist a dichotomy of child and woman that I found positively endearing and very entertaining. Kaila is a teenager who conveys the innocence of a sheltered child with her earnestness, compassion and sweetness.” –Mommasez
“Starseed brings a nice sci-fi flavor with a dash of romance to the genre. Fans of SF in general can enjoy . . .the juicy splashes of science fact and fiction, along with those who would like to dip into the genre pool without being drowned in too much SF too soon. This is a welcome edition to the SFR YA genre.” A Writer’s Dream
“I really liked the story. It caught me off guard and won me over after the first chapter. The main conflict is a personal one for Kalia. Will she embrace her alien side or continue life as a human?” –Pixie Dust Reviews
“The concept of starseeds was a big selling point for me. I’ve watched enough Star Trek and sci-fi in my time that this really hooked me. Aliens, who look perfectly normal, and so much like humans they might as well be, are hiding among us. Maybe they’re trying to help us into a Golden Age. Maybe they simply want to watch and learn about us. Or, maybe, they’re here for another, darker reason.” –The Forbidden Library

The Platte River Waltz, Chapters 1-4 by Ken Consaul
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, Romance, Historical Fiction, Historical Romance
S et in a panorama of the American West as its portrait is first being painted, The Platte River Waltz is the initial stroke in the unfolding of Josh Bonner’s tale. In 1848, only seventeen years old, on the Oregon Trail and suddenly orphaned, Josh begins a journey through the unsettled frontier of a wild continent. Just making first acquaintance with manhood, he quickly finds his future linked to Elizabeth Hampton, a coquette from his old hometown. Together they resolve to venture into an uncertain and dangerous future. Accompanied by Jubilee, an escaped slave, Josh and Elizabeth join a wagon train of Missouri emigrants led by a voyageur scout and a town constable turned captain. The couple commences a lusty exploration of the lands they pass and of each other.
The scout is the first to recognize the mettle of Josh Bonner, taking the novitiate under his wing. Others in the party, a missionary couple, an adventurous sawbones, and a clan of farmers, quickly recognize the newcomers as a formidable alliance that drives the expedition across the wild prairie. The land, the weather, and human frailty threaten, but cannot daunt their resolve. Populated with compelling characters, colorful dialog, intriguing subplots, and thrilling encounters, The Platte River Waltz explores a period of American history largely bypassed by contemporary historical fiction.
This first installment contains the initial chapters and introduces the characters, settings, and style of the overall work painting them into the backdrop of the western plains at the commencement of the great migration from the civilized East. This sample contains the first four chapters, approximately fifty pages, as excerpted from, The Platte River Waltz, Orphans in the Storm.

M illie is flying. She’s spreading her wings and soaring, up and away from the filth of the city, away from the putrid yards and bloodstained alleyways, away from the crazy, crooked labyrinth of the rookeries, those last, teetering remnants of a medieval world, tucked in the shadows of the 19th-century city. Millie is six years old and dreams of skies and seas beyond her brief experience. But sooner or later she must come back down to earth. Back to the Manor, where Vincent will return any minute, to set his girls to work on the twilit streets. Back to this loft, where she’s just released his songbird and lost him a precious sale. Millie can hear him, now, roaring and crashing up the stairs. Her flight is at an end, and her life is about to change its course forever.
BIRDCAGE traces 25 years of Millie’s story, against the backdrop of London’s transformation from medieval city to modern metropolis. It’s a story of angels and garrotters; of French courtesans and back-street brothels; of ghosts and cats, secrets and mysteries; of the thieves and working girls, fraudsters, tale-tellers and odd-bods who form the strange and compelling family of the Manor–a cut above the rest of the London slums.
