Kindle Daily Deal – Those Who Save Us
kindle daily deal
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum
F or fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy’s sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald.
Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother’s life.
Combining a passionate, doomed love story, a vivid evocation of life during the war, and a poignant mother/daughter drama, Those Who Save Us is a profound exploration of what we endure to survive and the legacy of shame.

AEFLE AND GISELA by Libby Malin
Genre(s): Humor, Romance, Contemporary Romance
S TOPPING A WEDDING: WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
Medieval History Professor Thomas Charlemagne thinks he’s finally slaying the dragon of his “Timid Tommy” reputation when he responds to an outlandish dare at a bachelor party and stops a wedding the very next morning.
The only problem? He wanders into the wrong church.
That doesn’t matter to bride DeeDee McGowan, however, who was having second, third, and fourth thoughts about saying “I do” anyway. She grabs the chance to leave her groom at the altar, dragging Tom with her.
DeeDee and Tom share a history, a fling more than ten years ago, before he went off to graduate school and started ascending the career ladder of academe and she took over her father’s car dealership in sleepy Oyster Point, Maryland, building it into a coveted business treasure. Their reconnection sets sparks flying between them — from the original passion that bonded them and the class differences that parted them.
Meanwhile, what started as a prank leads to serious legal issues for both Tom and DeeDee as the groom sues them, DeeDee countersues, and Tom is caught in the middle. Concerned that this distraction will affect his quest for tenure, Tom encounters an unsympathetic department chair eager to replace him with a renaissance expert from the UK and a women’s studies professor committed to challenging the “validity” of Thomas’s signature research into an obscure poetry-writing medieval monk, Aefle, and his lady-love, Gisela.
A comic romp blended with sharp satire, AEFLE AND GISELA delivers laughs and love as Thomas learns, along with his “little monk,” that life outside the “scriptorium” requires him to find real courage at last.

MODERN WOMEN (20th Century Series, Book #4) by Ruth Harris
Genre(s): Comedy
N EW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
1,000,000 copies sold
Originally published in hard cover & mmpb by St. Martin’s Press
“RUTH HARRIS HAS WRITTEN A SUPERB ‘RAGS TO RICHES’ STORY….Harris knows how to create characters that are alive and familiar. These three women, Lincky, Jane and Elly, are like old friends, women we’ve all known. Their experiences, hopes and fears are universal, and yet like most modern women they too wonder if they will find the right man and or how to get rid of the wrong one. Each in their own way finds success and a successful relationship. You’ll love MODERN WOMEN.”–West Coast Review of Books
“ENTERTAINING. RUTH HARRIS’ BREEZY PROSE STYLE, PEPPERY DIALOGUE AND IRREVERENT OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATURES OF MEN AND WOMEN MAKE MODERN WOMEN FUN TO READ.”–Dallas News
“AUTHOR RUTH HARRIS’ RAPIER WIT SPICES UP A COMING-OF-AGE-IN-THE-SEXIST-’60s STORY….FUNNY, SAD, VIVID, AND MORE THAN RAUNCHY ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE MOST RIBALD APPETITES. HARRIS SEEKS TO ENLIVEN AND ENTERTAIN, AND SHE DOES IT IN SPADES.
“The latest offering from author Ruth Harris (HUSBANDS AND LOVERS, LOVE AND MONEY) recounts the trials of the feminist trenches as each recovers from the earth-shattering assassination of President Kennedy and regroups to wage her individual battle against gender injustice.
“There’s brash, bawdy Jane Gresch, who happens to be on the press bus in the presidential motorcade when the fatal shots are fired in Dallas’ Dealy Plaza. When her date, journalist Owen Casals, steals Jane’s ideas and manhandles her affections, she becomes a ticking time bomb of self-destructive impulses.
“Elly McGrath, the other woman in Owen’s life, is a flat chested activist who has stumbled from one disastrous relationship to another. Her decade-long devotion to Owen Casals finally leads to marriage, but her problems are far from over.
“Lincky Desmond comes to her feminist awakening the hard way. Her parents die in a plane crash, the family business is sold out from under her, and her “perfect” first marriage to the doting, adorable Peter ends in predictable disaster.
“The three women eventually find fulfillment and each other in the publishing world. Jane writes about what she knows, sex, and becomes a wildly successful author. Elly parlays her talents into a key slot in the publicity department at North Star, a top publishing house, where she is assigned to trumpet Jane’s roman a clef about her own husband, Owen. Lincky, who has become North Star’s president, has the courage to handle Jane’s book, which others consider too hot to hawk.”–The Cleveland Plain-Dealer
“UPBEAT, SASSY….HARRIS WILL ENGAGE FANS AND NEWCOMERS ALIKE WITH ITS LIKABLE CHARACTERS AND ENJOYABLE FORAYS INTO THE POPULAR CULTURE OF THE 1960s. The story centers on three women in the their twenties at the time of John F. Kennedy’s assassination (a recurring motif) who dabble in the sexual, cultural and political freedoms that raucous era thrust upon the new generation…..Filled with romantic sparks, fast action and interesting tidbits of social history.”—Booklist
“SHARPLY AND STYLISHLY WRITTEN…Harris treads a fine line between popular fiction and more substantive women’s literature. She explores the effects of personal, political, social and sexual upheaval on a group of women who found themselves on the cusp of a society that promised women more risks and challenges that had ever before been available to them. Jane, Lincky and Elly are by turns bold, insecure, determined, passionate, daring and unconventional. Their paths, and those of their husbands and lovers, cross over a period of 25 years. Through each of these women Harris examines the meaning of love, success and personal happiness.”–Chicago Sun-Times
“GLORY BE! EXCELLENT…A thoroughly delightful tale of what it was like to be young, ambitious and in love during an exciting period of history.”–Los Angeles Times

Reviews
Smith has a keen eye for material details, but her prose is lucid and uncluttered by heavy description. Imagine a satire on Cool Britannia made by the Coen Brothers. –Times Literary Supplement
A screwball comedy that really works. –The Independent
This is a novel in which the ordinary and the unusual are constantly juxtaposed in various idiosyncratic characters… Its airy quirkiness is a delight. –The Times
Smith’s world is as wacky as Nicola Barker’s, but much funnier, less disquieting. Perhaps the Evelyn Waugh of Decline and Fall comes closer… She is a great snapper-up of unconsidered trifles… Wicked! –Time Out

Bargain Kindle Book – The Hand That First Held Mine
The Hand That First Held Mine by Maggie O’Farrell
L exie Sinclair is plotting an extraordinary life for herself.
Hedged in by her parents’ genteel country life, she plans her escape to London. There, she takes up with Innes Kent, a magazine editor who wears duck-egg blue ties and introduces her to the thrilling, underground world of bohemian, post-war Soho. She learns to be a reporter, to know art and artists, to embrace her life fully and with a deep love at the center of it. She creates many lives–all of them unconventional. And when she finds herself pregnant, she doesn’t hesitate to have the baby on her own.
Later, in present-day London, a young painter named Elina dizzily navigates the first weeks of motherhood. She doesn’t recognize herself: she finds herself walking outside with no shoes; she goes to the restaurant for lunch at nine in the morning; she can’t recall the small matter of giving birth. But for her boyfriend, Ted, fatherhood is calling up lost memories, with images he cannot place.
As Ted’s memories become more disconcerting and more frequent, it seems that something might connect these two stories– these two women– something that becomes all the more heartbreaking and beautiful as they all hurtle toward its revelation.
Here Maggie O’Farrell brings us a spellbinding novel of two women connected across fifty years by art, love, betrayals, secrets, and motherhood. Like her acclaimed The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, it is a “breathtaking, heart-breaking creation.”*And it is a gorgeous inquiry into the ways we make and unmake our lives, who we know ourselves to be, and how even our most accidental legacies connect us.
*The Washington Post Book World
Reviews
“O’Farrell brings to mind Sue Miller but with a British and darker flavor; her sure hand for psychological suspense . . . continues to be most impressive.” —Library Journal
“Maggie O’Farrell’s cinematically vivid novel is moody and powerful and plotted at a breakneck pace. This book, like life, will disarm you with its unannounced twists and tragedies and moments of unexpected beauty. She delivers to readers that rarest of experiences—total emotional investment. Hers is a brilliant feat of prose marksmanship—also, it made me cry on the subway.” —Heidi Julavits, author of The Effect of Living Backwards and The Uses of Enchantment
“Maggie O’Farrell knows how to weave a bewitching tale, both thrilling and poetic. The Hand That First Held Mine will no doubt enrapture you, just as it has me.” —Tatiana de Rosnay, author of Sarah’s Key
“An exquisitely sensual tale of love, motherhood, and other forms of madness, The Hand That First Held Mine will unsettle, move, and haunt you.” —Emma Donoghue, author of Slammerkin
“Maggie O’Farrell deftly depicts the long-after shocks of death, betrayal, and life-changing love as her richly complicated characters play out an immensely satisfying plot. The Hand That First Held Mine is a dazzling and absorbing novel.” —Margot Livesey, author of The House on Fortune Street
“Maggie O’Farrell is an uncommonly perceptive writer, and The Hand That First Held Mine is an unforgettable story of family, ambition, and love. I couldn’t stop thinking about it long after I read the final page.” —Lauren Grodstein, author of A Friend of the Family

Virtual Strangers (Love and murder in cyberspace) by Ola Zaltin
Genre(s): Romance, Romantic Suspense
T wo complete strangers meet on a train and agree to off their significant others. Sounds familiar? It should be, it’s ‘Strangers on a Train’. 60 years later, two strangers meet online. A man and a woman – Seabee and Annika – hook up on a wannabe authors’ site where they flirt, banter and play around with the notion of dispatching their equally impossible partners. It’s all a big literary, intertextual joke, until the weekend when both their partners actually do die in what seems to be unrelated freak accidents – or are they? Seabee and Annika find out in a hurry that cyberspace makes strange bedfellows – and if it’s not he nor she who did it – then who has done the killings? The two team up to find out who has hijacked their fantasy and turned it into a bloody real-life. Contains strong language
Authors note: This is the novel where Susanne O’Leary stepped out of her comfort zone (chick-lit and womens contemporary) straight into Ola Zaltin’s (crime and post-modern). Like the hero and heroine, they met on a writer’s site. Together, they wrote a detective story that merged two writing styles and two ways of thinking into one highly unusual and (we hope) thrilling and enjoyable detective story with a romantic twist.

S amantha acts without thinking. Her heart is huge while her sense of purpose is small; she’s willing to fight for those she loves, but she’s never learned to fight for herself. Eighteen-year-old Melody is cold and calculating, and she’s driven by the desire to better herself. As these compelling yet deeply flawed women battle for the affections of twenty-five-year-old Nathan, he becomes increasingly confused and torn between them. Nathan is Melody’s English teacher, and after he saves her from being raped, she becomes attached. Melody longs for the affection she’s never felt, so she involves people in her self-invented drama, making sure she is at once the star and the director. Meanwhile, Samantha is newly married to Nathan. But Samantha has hang-ups about motherhood and lingering feelings for her ex. To make sense of the world, Sam relates her life to the themes of her favorite movies, while she independently makes a documentary to jump-start her non-existent film career.
Stylistically influenced by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Weiner, Starring in the Movie of my Life is told alternately from both Samantha’s and Melody’s points-of-view and relates two complete yet combined stories about love, acceptance, and redemption. Did his demonic mistress collect her due or is Paganini’s love for his son the real answer to the lingering mystery of his true life and death?
THE REVIEWS
“Nearly one hundred seventy years following his death at age fifty-seven from a throat ailment, the name of the Italian virtuoso, Niccolò Paganini, continues to conjure up a variety of associations: those of a gaunt, nearly spectral showman and breathless daredevil of the violin, an inveterate gambler, an incorrigible womanizer, and — stated sotto voce — the Devil’s collaborator…A ‘devilish’ master performing his wizardry only inches away from the powerful Christian symbols placed at the very heart of his majestic violin! This, indeed, is the stuff of legend and provides the perfect vehicle for PAGANINI’S FIRE.”
– Stephanie Chase, Concert Violinist and Educator
Reviews of Ann Abelson’s other books:
“…a highly interesting story.”
– New York Times Book Review of “The Little Conquerors”.
“Miss Abelson has something to say and says it with individuality…”

Bird of Passage by Catherine Czerkawska
Genre(s): Literary Fiction
D ealing sensitively with the shocking realities of state-sanctioned physical abuse and its aftermath, Bird of Passage is a powerful story of cruelty, loss and enduring love.
1960s Scotland. Young Finn O’Malley is sent from Ireland to work at the potato harvest and soon forms a close friendship with Kirsty Galbreath, the farmer’s red-headed grand-daughter. But Finn is damaged by a childhood so traumatic that he can only recover his memories slowly. What happened at the brutal Industrial School to which he was committed while still a little boy? For the sake of his sanity, he must try to find out why he was sent there, and what became of the mother he lost. As he struggles to answer these questions, his ability to love and be loved in return is called into question.
When Kirsty moves away from home to study in Edinburgh, the threads that have bound these two friends so closely together begin to unravel. Only Kirsty’s ambitions as an artist can give her the fulfilment she seeks. But her work is tied up with her affection, not just for the island, but for Finn, who comes and goes, like the corncrake, a summer visitor. Many years later, India, a successful folk musician, returns to the small island where she was born, to unravel the mysterious and tragic love story which has remarkable significance for herself.
Catherine Czerkawska is an award winning author of novels, short stories and many plays for the stage and for BBC Radio 4. When not writing, she also finds time to collect and deal in antique and vintage textiles.
‘It’s not just a cracking read, it’s a genuinely powerful one, and once you stumble over the great love story at its centre you won’t be able to put this book down. There’s real pain here and many different kinds of healing, few of them nice. A story that like Wuthering Heights has as many harsh and knotted bits as deliciously sweet ones, you will be taken to a different world by it, but one as real as your own.’ David Manderson

Queen Anne’s Lace – A novel about family relationships by Damaris West
Genre(s): Chick-Lit, Contemporary Fiction
T he cottage, just near enough to the sea to give a ‘sea feeling’, was more than a holiday home to the McKay family; it was somewhere they all found peace and happiness in their differing ways.
Just widowed and seeking relief from loneliness in the religious life of a convent, Isabel McKay offers the cottage to the nuns in a rush of sentimentality. Her three children, Kate, Angus and Violet, are variously furious, shocked, and intrigued by their mother’s choices. Plots to dissuade her come to nothing,
The children have their own interweaving lives and relationships to pursue. Everything comes to a head at the wedding reception of the pregnant Kate when her father-in-law, an ill-meaning meddler, goads Isabel into announcing, prematurely, that she means to sell the cottage because the nuns have rejected it.
The announcement, although apparently divisive, sows the seeds of an unexpected solution to the family’s dilemma, but it is a solution which will require sacrifice and some drastic changes of allegiance.
