Ghosts of Victims Past by Steven Beste
Genre(s): Humor, Social Situations, Bullies, Literature, People & Places
D rew Wolf and his lacrosse teammates run around Sparta Middle School like a pack of wild animals. They’re bigger and stronger than most kids and they make it their daily mission to torment the weak and terrorize the weird. It even looks as though they’re going to get away with their latest stunt–taking a pants down picture of one of the school’s biggest wimps, Andrew Spinkowitz (AKA Sphincter). Drew is planning on sending the picture around school but before he can hit send, he is visited by the three spirits–past, present and future–and is forced to confront what will happen if he goes through with it. Can the spirits convince Drew to change his ways or will disaster strike both bully and victim?
Ghosts of Victims Past (Word Count 28,729. Reading Level 3.5) is an exciting, funny and touching middle grade novel that has an important message about the consequences of one’s actions. Boys (ages 8-12) will especially enjoy the first person narrative. Because the story ultimately has a powerful anti-bully message, parents and teachers will want children to read it. Plus, this novel mirrors Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, and it can be an important introduction for young readers into classic literature.

Graves’ End: A Magical Thriller by Sean Patrick Traver
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Fantasy, Contemporary, Magic & Wizards, World Literature, Mythology
A modern-day witch helps an undead detective solve the mystery of his own resurrection in this magical thriller with a touch of classic LA noir!
Los Angeles PI Dexter Graves was pretty sure his life ended back in 1950, after a mysterious femme fatale shot him through the head. When Graves involuntarily rises from his grave sixty years later, he finds himself drawn to freelance sorceress Lia Flores, who introduces him to an underworld he never could’ve imagined. Lia sets out to discover the meaning behind Graves’ unexpected intrusion into her enchanted life, but neither the witchgirl nor the skeletal detective has any idea they’re being set up by an old-school player on the LA scene: mobster/monster Mickey Hardface, also known as Mictlantecuhtli, the ambitious king of the Aztec realm of the dead.
Funny and fast-paced, this genre-bending love letter to the City of Angels blends surreal magical fantasy with the narrative drive of a taut crime story. Epic in scope and rooted in California history, GRAVES’ END adds a new chapter to the mythology of the post-Halloween holiday known as el Dia de los Muertos–the Day of the Dead.

Life on his family’s small farm outside Bells Ferry, Mississippi, was safe and routine: chores, taking care of his little sister, working at a local gas station, swimming in the Wolf River with his best friend–his world was familiar and predictable. All that would change as young Nelson experiences his first love, wrestles with the secret his best friend has been hiding, and meets a mysterious stranger who appears one day on an exotic motorcycle called the Black Shadow. Capped by the devastating effects of hurricane Camille, the events of that summer ensured that life as Nelson knew it would never be the same again.
In his first full-length novel since since the critically acclaimed Return to Innocence (1st ed. 1999), G. M. Frazier takes us back to a simpler and more carefree time in American life with an uncompromising coming of age story that deals with hard-hitting issues that are tackled head-on with courage, not only by the writer, but by the characters he has created. For readers who spent their tween on teen years in the late 60s, A Death on the Wolf will take you back to a familiar time and introduce you to unforgettable characters. For younger readers, the story will give you a glimpse of teenage life that is no more, and yet shows how courage, morality, and friendship are timeless concepts in the face of life’s trials and tribulations.

Ristorante Marcellino by Theresa Oles
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, Literary, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
I n a rundown restaurant on the Upper East Side four people find themselves in a ceaseless battle for survival in a seemingly unforgiving city. Evelyn, an immigrant from Romania, tries to establish control in the chaos of the place that has, since the start of the recession, fallen apart, and in her efforts to enforce her own rules, she further alienates herself from the rest of the staff. Ivana is another waitress at Marcellino, one of the few who aggressively resists Evelyn’s control and the new found power she has found following her employment. Frankie the bartender is different, as he evades Evelyn, having grown up in poverty in the South Bronx, experiencing all kinds of hardship. Then there’s Germano, the owner, who cunningly finds a way to trap his employees as they try to establish more promising lives for themselves. In the end the habits these four individuals have formed as a way to satiate their lust for money or power inevitably brings about their less than desirable fate.

System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation–each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives–and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Winner of the National Academy of Sciences Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the ten best books of 2011, Thinking, Fast and Slow is destined to be a classic.

The Shell Collector: Stories by Anthony Doerr
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, Literary, Short Stories, Single Author, United States, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
I n this astonishingly assured, exquisitely crafted debut collection, Anthony Doerr takes readers from the African coast to the suburbs of Ohio, from sideshow pageantry to harsh wilderness survival, charting a vast and varied emotional landscape. Like the best storytellers, Doerr explores the human condition in all its manifestations: metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts. Most dazzling is Doerr’s gift for conjuring nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of his characters contend with tremendous hardship; some discover unique gifts; all arc united by their ultimate deference to the mysteries of their respective landscapes. In “The Hunter’s Wife,” a hunter’s profession is challenged when he learns that his wife can communicate with animal spirits. “For a Long Time This Was Griselda’s Story” features two sisters in Idaho struggling to come to terms with the very different paths they have chosen, one traveling the globe with a sideshow and one remaining with her mother in their hometown. In “July 4th,” a group of wealthy Americans enters a bet with a gang of British sportsmen: the first side to land the largest freshwater fish on each of the continents wins. The title story describes a blind marine biologist who isolates himself in a thatch-roofed kibanda in Kenya, only to be thrust into the spotlight when he accidentally discovers the cure for a fatal disease. Like all of Doerr’s stories, it shimmers with beautiful language and transports readers to a perfectly realized, magical world of his own creation. The Shell Collector is an enchanting and imaginative debut by a young writer embarking on an important literary career.

The Road to Magic (Book 1 of the Way of the Demon Series) by Alexey Glushanovsky
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Fantasy, Epic, Magic & Wizards
T he world that Glushanovsky paints is wonderfully-saturated with elements from all over the fantasy genre–though this is not simply a tale of sword and sorcery. These classical fantasy figures are well-executed and have the sensibility of a seasoned Russian fantasy novel, especially since this is part of a tetralogy previously published in Russia. Readers of George R.R. Martin, Raymond Feist and Stephen R. Donaldson will adore THE ROAD TO MAGIC.
There are exciting parallel narratives at work in THE ROAD TO MAGIC. On one level we have the handsome playboy Oleg Davidov as a modern-day college student; on another level we have Oleg the demon savior of the princess; and on another level, Oleg the monster hunter. Like Harry Potter, Oleg was once a normal boy until he is magnificently transformed into something supernatural, which is later used as a commentary/comic relief tool once Oleg is a demon. That’s what you get when you dabble in magic with a demoness. Rarely does Oleg ever approach the world of fantasy as an outsider–in fact he feels right at home in that world. After Oleg resolves the princess’s plight, he then takes off to learn magic at the university–but not before Oleg can slay some monsters in a few Herculean feats on his way to becoming a student of magic. Readers will also learn a lot about Russian pop-culture from reading THE ROAD TO MAGIC. The complex story, moving along at a brisk pace, presents an intelligent take on the nature of fantasy gods and the human relationship to both gods and monsters.
Glushanovsky expertly draws raw, compelling characters with depth and surprising twists. No one is more real than Oleg, the multi-dimensional main character who is one of the most original and engaging characters you’ll encounter. Glushanovsky’s references to pop-culture gives the book a fascinating window into the youth of today. It’s one of the many things about THE ROAD TO MAGIC that sets the book apart from all the Tolkein and Robert Jordan clones that have flooded the fantasy market. This, plus the strong character of Oleg, gives the book a delightful and engrossing feel, making it a totally unique work of fantasy.
About the Author:
Alexey Glushanovsky is a respected fantasy author in Russia and THE ROAD TO MAGIC is a unique novel written in an engaging style that is conversational and intimate. He received the “Eurasia” award in 2011 for HEART OF THE BLIZZARD. He is one of the top thirty writers in Russia.

Cadan Johnson lived a seemingly ordinary life. He was on the soccer and cross country teams and had a loving family. But one thing about the Johnsons made them very unordinary- they could perform magic.
When a mysterious spell on his school counselor backfires, Cadan is faced with the realization that everything he thought he knew about his family has been a lie. He leaves his home to search out the identities of his real parents, but before he can discover the truth, he is tracked down by another group of magic-wielders, this time sent by the government.
The top-secret Department of Magic was set up in the 1930s when the U.S. government became aware of the existence of mages and fantastical creatures. For the last eighty years, the agency has been commissioned with searching out and detaining these magical beings, and making sure everyone else believes they are no more than myth.
Now a detainee within the Department, Cadan quickly realizes the truth – that not everything in this world is quite as it seems. The Femme Fatales, a world famous all-female pop group is actually a troupe of fairies. And Tyler Knox, the teen heartthrob, is secretly an elf who has had to alter his ears before appearing in movies.
Now a rookie agent, Cadan begins to train with his new team of misfit operatives, among them one boy with four arms who is afraid of the dark, another with black wings, and an elf with anger management issues. The group fights constantly, their training sessions are disasters, and to top it off, the leader of the team hates him. After a lot of trial and error, including writing the middle grade novel Jack Templar Monster Hunter, he discovered a process that worked and his son is now an avid reader. After posting on the topic of reluctant readers on a blog, he was bombarded with positive feedback from parents who also had a reluctant reader. In response to this, he decided to write Reaching The Reluctant Reader to hopefully help parents get their young readers excited about books. 100% of author proceeds will benefit the Toys For Tots Literacy Program.

Humorous Lines and Clever Interjections for Contemporary Flirting by Upward
Genre(s): Health Fitness & Dieting, Relationships, Interpersonal Relations, Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Jokes & Riddles, Self-Help & Psychology, Advice & How-to, Health Mind & Body, Mate Seeking
A fter so many years of social interaction you have common sayings you gravitate to quite often. You have your “can’t argue with that” line. Your “you need to get out more” line. Your “I call it like I see it” line. You find no reason in brushing up on your humor when “that’s what she said” interjections win over social circles just fine. Performing a stand-up routine is not something on your list of things to try this year and you are kind of past the “I’m going to be overly outgoing” shtick, yet the charming nature of being quick-witted is something you and the rest of us still find appealing.
In comes a collection of a couple hundred phrases and words that is not exactly a how-to book. In fact it was never meant to be a book at all. Years ago, a very good looking young gentleman, going by the pseudonym Upward, started noting remarks he found inherently playful and somewhat common in conversation for only his personal use, until recently when he decided to pack them up, add examples, and share them with the self-improving public. They are phrases to laugh at. Most of them you will recognize. Now you will have the lines in your metaphorical back pocket to nonchalantly pull out when needed. In essence, a manual to ease your l’esprit de l’escalier. Socially potent fire, if you will.
Can Money Buy Happiness? Ten case studies with five different conclusions – you be the judge! by Cal Andrews
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Leaders & Notable People, Rich & Famous, Politics & Social Sciences, Sociology, Class
W ealthy individuals are often quoted as saying, “Money isn’t everything.” Those of us who are less fortunate think it sure would be nice to have all our financial problems solved, so we can focus on the rest of that “everything.” Having a lot of money does seem to result in a whole new set of problems, however – ones which many of us would welcome.
In this text, Cal Andrews attempts to settle the matter of whether or not money is capable of purchasing happiness. The lives of ten men who acquired fortunes are examined, with a focus on how they felt about their wealth and in what ways it changed them – Men such as Kurt Cobain, Howard Stern, Andrew Carnegie, Jesse Livermore, and Ted turner. These ten guys are each quite unique, having different worldviews and coming from different social backgrounds.
The author draws a remarkable conclusion from these case studies. From it, he derives a formula for managing wealth in a manner which will keep a person free from the problems which many have experienced from becoming rich. Ignore this formula at your own peril.
