All the Roads That Lead From Home by Anne Leigh Parrish
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Short Stories, Single Author, Chick-Lit, Contemporary Women, Contemporary Fiction
“ Anne Leigh Parrish has written a collection of stories that deserve a place on the shelf next to Raymond Carver, Tom Boyle, Richard Bausch, and other investigators of lives gone wrong. Parrish writes with painful clarity about marriages turned sour, children at war with their parents, women drifting from one damaging relationship to another, and about unexpected acts of generosity-an impoverished woman giving her battered piano to a priest who had befriended her, a schoolgirl who bribes a boy to pretend an interest in an overweight classmate, then finds that her kindness has disastrous consequences. These are potent and artful stories, from a writer who warrants attentive reading.” – C. Michael Curtis, Fiction Editor, The Atlantic Monthly

Naturally Up to 160 Calories. Everyday Delicious Treats! by Revital Federbush
Genre(s): Cookbooks Food & Wine, Baking, Desserts, Health Fitness & Dieting, Diets & Weight Loss, Food Counters
H ow much sugar can we eat a day?
This is the famous nutritionist Professor Marion Nestle’s advice:
How can we enjoy eating sweets without gaining weight or impairing our health? As a journalist, I’ve asked the famous nutritionist, Professor Marion Nestle, that same question in an interview. In her very interesting book “What to Eat”, she wrote that she loves to eat sweets and that she allows herself to eat 10% from her calorie intake as sugars (4 tablespoons a day). The daily calorie intake of an average person is 1,600- 2,200 calories. That means that everyone can eat a treat that has160-220 calories everyday.
Of course you can eat a little piece of chocolate, but who can? A160 calories piece is too small. As a woman who has to struggle with her sweet tooth, I started to invent treat recipes that were tasty and of sufficient size (for example, a standard-size muffin or two large cookies) and had up to 160 calories.
What’s the secret? How come a regular cake has about 500 calories and my cakes are only 160 calories? It’s as sweet as any regular cake and has regular sugar and no artificial sweeteners. In past years, I’ve explored the field of fat substitutes in cakes. The secret is replacing the one ingredient that contains the most calories in cakes –fats– with tasty and healthy natural substitutes like applesauce, yogurt, and orange juice. Fat has an important role in cakes. It gives texture and moisture. But fat is also why cakes are so fattening. In fact, a cup of sugar has 750 calories while a cup of oil has 1,700 calories! After thousands of attempts in my kitchen, I discovered certain combinations of ingredients that can give the same soft texture and moistness of fat in cakes but at up to twenty times fewer calories. I tested all the recipes on picky eaters, adults, and even children. Most of them could not guess these were low-calorie treats. These are easy-to-prepare recipes so you can eat your daily tasty, healthy treat, but without the calorie penalty.
With the “Naturally Up to 160 Calories. Everyday Delicious Treats!” you can:
* Discover the secrets of and innovative techniques for making delicious, fluffy cakes using natural, healthy ingredients such as applesauce (100 calories/cup), Greek yogurt (183 calories/cup) and orange juice instead of oil and butter (1,700 calories/cup). You can enjoy a good-size sweet treat (the size of a standard muffin, cupcake or two large cookies) of 160 calories max.
* Find a large and varied range of easy, from-scratch recipes for sweet and healthy cakes, cupcakes and cookies, using only natural ingredients, including real sugar, and without any fake ingredients such as artificial sweeteners, egg substitutes or any other dietetic products.
* Make healthy, delicious treats for children. All recipes were sampled on children – they loved the flavors and had no idea they were eating low-calorie treats.

if the volatile chef at Vincenzo’s Ristorante had actually survived the meal.
But before Sophia’s chilled spoon hit the spumoni, someone plunged a knife into
Vincenzo’s back and the word on everyone’s lips went from mangia to murder.
Sophia soon finds herself trailing crime boss
Frankie Vidoni, chatting with his mouthy mistress Maria, and dodging henchman
Mooch DiMuccio. She’s suspicious of Vincenzo’s widow, Stella, and his assistant
chef, Eugene, because they don’t appear the least bit dismayed by Vincenzo’s
passing. There is no conversation Sophia won’t eavesdrop on, no question she
won’t ask, and no danger she won’t face to find the killer.

Tasting Home: Coming of Age in the Kitchen by Judith Newton
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Cookbooks Food & Wine
I f Julia Child had cooked Italian for a gay husband, used sugar to sweeten a sour childhood, and hosted buffets for a better world, she could have written Tasting Home: Coming of Age in the Kitchen.
In this food memoir, Judith Newton shares the unforgettable story of a life on the front lines of activism and in the kitchen. During a difficult childhood, food and cooking were sources of comfort and emotional sustenance. And in the decades to come, through her marriage to a gay man, her discovery of feminism, her life in a commune, and her career as an academic, she used food to sustain personal and political relationships, mourn losses, and celebrate victories. As she earned her activist stripes in the 1960s and beyond, she also learned how food could ease tension, foster community, and build cross-racial ties.
Tasting Home combines recipes with personal vignettes, in the classic form of food memoirs by writers such as M.F.K. Fisher and Ruth Reichl, to take us on a remarkable journey through the cuisines, cultural spirit, and politics of the 1940s through the 2000s.
By turns moving, joyful, thoughtful, and wry, it is sprinkled with recipes and scenes of cooking and dining that invite us to feel how deeply food is tied to identity,
love, community, and political engagement.
If you loved Like Water for Chocolate, you should try Tasting Home.

B rief Synopsis
CONNECTED is a speculative fiction thriller with touches of science and philosophy, which reached No.1 in Amazon UK’s Bestseller lists for both Thrillers and Science Fiction within 5 days of release.
Beginning with the funeral of a renowned classical violinist in a sleepy rural hamlet in the Lake District, a former theoretical physicist tries to make sense of his brother’s suicide. Across the country, a university student, enjoying the unexpected attentions of an enigmatic seductress, is disturbed when his best friend falls to his death from the thirteenth floor of a neighbouring campus tower block.
As each tries to unravel the mystery behind the apparent suicides, they are drawn into an obsessive search for a computer-generated fractal video sequence, with startling effects on human consciousness, and which might just pave the way for discovery of the ultimate Theory of Everything.
However, they are not the only ones to have seen the potential of this mind-altering video, and soon find themselves in a desperate race against time with gangsters from the shadowy worlds of sex, drugs, cyber-crime, and massively multi-player on-line gaming.
Science Content
Although, as the reviews testify, CONNECTED has been enjoyed by many with no background in computer science, Mandelbrot Fractal geometry, string theory, quantum physics or brain science, those with some interest or knowledge in these areas seem to have particularly enjoyed the book.
One reason for this appears to be that most of these references are actually based on fact. Of course, some readers have preferred to skim these sections, and claim that this did not detract from the story. Others have appreciated the scientific detail and fidelity, and some have even thanked the author for explaining such things in a way that enabled them to learn something new.
Philosophy, Science and Religion
Although CONNECTED is mostly enjoyed as a fast-paced mystery thriller, it is also, to a limited extent, about the inevitable conflict between science and religion. The two main male protagonists happen to be atheist, and some of the dialogue explores the different thoughts and attitudes concerning some of life’s deeper questions. These include the origins of the universe, the nature of consciousness, and whether there could be life after death. Again these philosophical references to faith and atheism are few, and mostly quite short, but all are crucial to the story.
Setting and slang
CONNECTED is a contemporary novel, set entirely in England. As the story unfolds through two converging plot threads, the action switches between a fictitious village in the Lake District, the University of Essex in Colchester (an old Roman town about 60 miles north-east of London), Bracknell (a newer suburban town some 40 miles west of London), and North London.
Consequently, there is some British slang and occasional use of bad language (e.g. a few instances of the F-word etc.) in keeping with the age and background of the characters.
Why Connected?
Years ago, while the author was at university, a fellow student had a breakdown and was admitted to the local psychiatric hospital. A few, who knew him well, went to visit and reported that he’d subsequently lost the plot and was gabbling incomprehensibly of having found the answer to life, the universe and everything.
While most people seemed consumed with sadness and pity at this, the author’s first thought was, “What if he really had discovered some universal truth?” Although never seriously believing that he had, it was on that day that the seed of an idea lodged in his young brain – a seed that years later would germinate into the drafting of the first three chapters of CONNECTED from a cabin in the French Alps.

T he amazing true story of an out-of-control rock star, his devastating addiction to drugs, and his miraculous redemption through Jesus Christ.
In February 2005, more than ten thousand people in Bakersfield, California, watched as Brian “Head” Welch–the former lead guitarist of the controversial rock band Korn–was saved by Jesus Christ. The event set off a media frenzy as observers from around the world sought to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light. Now, in this courageous memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God and the tumultuous decade that led him into the arms of Jesus Christ. Offering a backstage pass to his time with Korn, Head tells the inside story of his years in the band and explains how his rock star lifestyle resulted in an all-consuming addiction to methamphetamines. Writing openly about the tour bus mayhem of Ozzfest and The Family Values tour, he provides a candid look at how the routine of recording, traveling, and partying placed him in a cycle of addiction that he could not break on his own.Speaking honestly about his addiction, Head details his struggles with the drug that ultimately led him to seek a higher power. Despite his numerous attempts to free himself from meth, nothing–not even the birth of his daughter–could spur him to kick it for good. Here Head addresses how, with the help of God, he emerged from his dangerous lifestyle and found a path that was not only right for his daughter, it was right for him. Discussing the chaotic end to his time in Korn and how his newfound faith has influenced his relationship with his daughter, his life, and his music, Head describes the challenging but rewarding events of the last two years, exposing the truth about how his moments of doubt and his hardships have only deepened his faith.Candid, compelling, and inspirational, Save Me from Myself is a rock ‘n’ roll journey unlike any other.

And it’s all Crystal’s fault.
Momma warned her not to consort with the dead and tried to teach her the magic spells that would close the portal to the afterlife. But Crystal doesn’t want to be a trailer-trash witch like Momma. She has dreams of going to community college and escaping the Appalachian town of Parson’s Ford.
Her best friend Bone is only too happy to escape the afterlife and help Crystal break the rules. Bone died too young, and she’ll do whatever it takes to remain among the living.
Then a teen movie maker comes to Parson’s Ford, and he has a very special project in mind: a horror movie starring a real ghost. The kids who watch his movies turn into brainwashed zombies. And to totally complicate matters, Crystal thinks he’s kind of a hunk, and she’s afraid her boyfriend Pettigrew only loves her because of Momma’s magic spells.
Now it’s Halloween, the night when the portal to the afterlife is widest, and somebody’s been messing with Momma’s potions. The fate of the world is in Crystal’s hands, but she hasn’t been paying attention to her lessons. And a mysterious figure in the afterlife is urging Bone to stay loyal to her own kind instead of to Crystal.
The movie is rolling, the creatures are stirring, and the brainwashed teenagers are ready to welcome a new star from the other side of the grave.

Working long hours among the bakery’s cluster of eclectic women — Linda, the irascible bread baker; earth mother Ellen and her partner Diane; and Tyler, the blue-haired barista — Wyn awakens to the truths that she missed while living the good life in Hancock Park.
Soon Wyn discovers that making bread possesses an unexpected and wondrous healing power, helping her to rediscover that nothing stays the same… bread rises, pain fades, the heart heals, and the future beckons.

Come Back (P.S.) by Claire Fontaine
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Specific Groups, Women, Parenting & Relationships, Parenting, Teenagers
T he unflinching true account of a teenage girl’s descent into society’s underbelly — and her mother’s desperate and ultimately successful attempts to bring her back. How does an honor student at one of Los Angeles’s finest prep schools — a bright, beautiful girl from a loving home — trade school uniforms and afternoons at the beach for shooting up in the back of a van in rural Indiana? How does her devoted mother emerge from the shock of finding that her daughter has not only disappeared but had been living a secret life for more than a year?Mother and daughter tell their parallel stories in mesmerizing first-person accounts. Claire Fontaine’s story is a parent’s worst nightmare, a cautionary tale chronicling her daughter Mia’s drug-fueled manipulation of everyone around her as she sought refuge in the seedy underworld of criminals and heroin addicts, the painful childhood secrets that led up to it, and the healing that followed. Her search for Mia was brutal for both mother and daughter, a dizzying series of dead ends, incredible coincidences and, at times, miracles. Ultimately, Mia was forced into harsh-but-loving boot camp schools on two continents while Claire entered a painful but life-changing program of her own. Mia’s story includes the jarring culture shock of the extreme and controversial behavior modification school she was in for nearly two years, which helped her overcome depression and self-hatred to emerge a powerful young woman with self-esteem and courage. An unforgettable story of love and transformation, Come Back is a heart-wrenching and humorous portrayal of the primal bond between mother and daughter that will resonate with women everywhere.

Roaring Mountain by Shirley Gray
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Specific Groups, Adventurers & Explorers
W hen my son, Gary Gray, was killed by an avalanche while climbing Mount Shuksan in the North Cascades, he was buried under tons of ice and snow. I was told his body might never be recovered and that perhaps I should consider him now a part of the mountain. It was the beginning of a journey unlike any I had taken before. For the next few years I traveled through devastating grief and tortuous self-doubt while unsuccessfully searching for reasons why my son’s life was taken by the very planet he was trying to save. Was it his destiny, kismet, or fate? Or was it just plain old bad luck? I had to try to find out.
After three years of being in limbo and soul-searching, and just when I thought he would remain in his icy sarcophagus forever, the mountain was ready to give him up. His body was recovered under extraordinary, miraculous circumstances and the stunning sequence of events surrounding the incredible recovery was to change forever the way I think and believe. My slightly skeptical nature could not help but grow into spiritual enlightenment after experiencing such miracles first hand.
Gary was a lover of nature and he loved the wilderness with all his heart. He was an adventurer who experienced life to the full and a mountain climber who was passionate about environment al issues. But the book is not so much about the man, but about the inexplicable events that surrounded his death and recovery. It’s about passion and miracles and love everlasting. And it’s typical of him that he used to sign all his cards and letters, Love & Life, Gary.

S he’s gorgeous–and only 450! He’s hot. She’s a vampyre movie star. He’s a cop. So what if they’re different species? In more than one way.
“Charming!” –The Romantic Times
“Adrienne has taken a very tired genre and super-injected it with a hyper-charged blast of raw sexual energy. A wild, tense, exciting ride that instantly grabs you by the neck and doesn’t let go!” –Rob Zombie, director of The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween
“Love Bites is pure fun from beginning to end.” –David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of Creepers
“A fast, funny, sexy take on Hollywood vampires. Her vampires are not only divine, they’re famous!” –Anne Stuart, New York Times bestselling author of Fire and Ice
A witty take on vampyres–and Hollywood. Not to mention love…
Ovsanna Moore is the star of 17 blockbuster horror films, a few not quite so successful, and 3 that went straight to video. She’s also a 450-year-old vampire, whose clan includes Orson Welles and Theda Bara and most of Hollywood’s A-list actors…but not too many people know that.
Peter King is the poster boy for hunky Beverly Hills police detectives. When he detects Ovsanna’s pearly whites are often times bloodied fangs, instead of borrowing his mother’s garlic and holy water, he asks Ovsanna for a date. And a romantic Christmas Eve turns into a holiday of horror. Right through New Year’s.
First the paparazzi, then the werewolves, then the agents, and the rougarou at the Sportsmen’s Lodge–everyone wants a piece of Ovsanna. Literally. And it doesn’t help that Ovsanna’s personal assistant and sometimes lover is using black magick to get rid of Peter.
Ovsanna calls on her clan, the Vampyres of Hollywood, to help her and Peter fight for their lives against a menagerie of supernatural beasts that give John Carpenter’s The Thing a run for its money. Love does more than just bite in this witty, vampire-thriller romance.
Barbeau’s “Scream Queen” credentials make her the only author who could combine such a fast-paced, edgy plot with tongue-in-cheek references to the inner workings and vanity of Hollywood. A whirlwind of action, Love Bites is a hilarious and clever take on vampyres–as well as on Hollywood–that readers will never forget.
“The fast and furious final pages will leave fans hoping for a third installment.” –Publishers Weekly
“An engaging, sinister romp.” –Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, creator of the Saint-Germain vampire series

It also includes action from The White House, The Vatican, The Presidential Palace in Tehran, CIA Headquarter, and Lambeth Palace in London.
EXCERPT
“Jack Reynolds is my name,” said Jack, happy in the knowledge that it would never leave the room. He spotted the papers in the priest’s hands and reached down and took them, “Ah, the famous Darwin Manuscript, have you been reading it to the ladies, father?”
“Well, I was just about to begin, if you wouldn’t mind,” said Father Mitchell reaching up for the documents.
“Well, will you look at that, a nice warm coal fire,” said Reynolds, “You don’t see those very often today, and I quite miss them.” He handed the sheaf of papers to O’Malley who quickly tore them into four and placed them carefully on the high flames of the burning coal.
The women gasped and the priest shouted, “Stop that.” It was too late, of course, because the papers were already burning. More importantly, none of them noticed Reynolds take out a large revolver and screw on a silencer.
Four silent shots whooshed across the sitting room, each one a direct hit to the head. Father Mitchell sat almost upright in his chair with a blood-ringed hole in the centre of his forehead; Margaret Morris and Marjorie Hall sat on the sofa with similar wounds and Marjorie had a look of surprise on her face as if she saw her killer. Jennifer Astbury suffered a shot through the back of her head, which now slumped over her chest.
The room was deathly quiet except for the slight noise of Reynolds unscrewing the silencer. “Check the bodies, O’Malley,” he said, turning away from the horrendous sight as if ashamed.
He was not the least bit ashamed; he was mentally counting his lifelong kill tally and was disappointed it was just short of one hundred. It was much more than that if he included bombs, mortars, and other long-distance weapons but Jack was only interested in his handgun kills.
“Check the bodies!” said O’Malley, “Why me and why check? You can see nobody’s goin’ somewhere.” He made similar comments every time, but he enjoyed to leave much of the killing to Reynolds, and was an excellent back up and clean-up man.

I Moved Your Cheese (0) by Deepak Malhotra
Genre(s): Business & Investing, Management & Leadership, Leadership, Motivational, Self-Help, Success
W ith more than twenty-five million copies in print, Who Moved My Cheese? has become a phenomenon. It does offer some reasonable advice about adapting to change. It’s certainly true that some of the events shaping our lives are beyond our control, and instead of struggling against them we must adapt and move on. But for all its good intentions, it ultimately advises us to unquestioningly accept our circumstances without exploring any possible alternatives–like mice in a maze mindlessly chasing after cheese.
I Moved Your Cheese takes a different point of view and offers an alternative approach. Harvard Business School professor and bestselling author Deepak Malhotra tells an inspiring story about a new generation of mice who begin to challenge assumptions and ask important questions. Rather than just accepting their situation and dutifully chasing the cheese, Max, Zed, and Big begin looking deeper, examining and reassessing what they’ve been told are their limitations, and set out to chart a new course.
Innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, problem solving, and business growth– as well as personal growth–depend on the ability to challenge accepted notions, reshape the environment, and play by a different set of rules: our own. We are not powerless to change our circumstances. We can control our destiny. By ana- lyzing our assumptions about the limitations we seem to face, we can, like Max, Zed, and Big, discover how to overcome them. But first we need to understand the ways we unknowingly hold ourselves back. As Zed explains to Max, “The problem is not that the mouse is in the maze but that the maze is in the mouse.”
