The Devil of Light (A Cass Elliot Crime Novel) by Gae-Lynn Woods
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Thrillers, Crime
A BIZARRE MURDER
When young Detective Cass Elliot responds to a report of domestic violence at the home of a prominent businessman, she finds him violently murdered in the barnyard with his battered wife unconscious near the tool that killed him. Still raw from her own unsolved attack six years ago, Cass is stunned when confronted with graphic photographs scattered across their kitchen floor, and she wonders if the wife might’ve had cause to kill her husband.
A COVERT WEB OF LIES AND EXPLOITATION
Cass and her partner Mitch Stone delve into a cunning world of blackmail and violence – and find a cult concealed for nearly a century beneath the genteel, small town façade of Arcadia in East Texas. Their investigation triggers a brutal response from powerful men who will protect their identities at any cost. They unleash a ruthless killer whose actions create a media frenzy and destroy the fabric of trust within the police department.
A PERVASIVE EVIL
Cass and Mitch circle closer to the cult’s few members, following a slim lead into a night lit by fire. A night that begins with a blood ritual and ends with Cass holding a man’s life – or death – in her hands and struggling to walk the fine line between vengeance and justice.

Hell Around the Horn by Rick Spilman
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Action & Adventure, Sea Adventures
H ell Around the Horn is a nautical thriller set in the last days of the great age of sail. In 1905, a young ship’s captain and his family set sail on the windjammer, Lady Rebecca, from Cardiff, Wales with a cargo of coal bound for Chile, by way of Cape Horn. Before they reach the Southern Ocean, the cargo catches fire, the mate threatens mutiny and one of the crew may be going mad, yet the greatest challenge will prove to be surviving the vicious westerly winds and mountainous seas of the worst Cape Horn winter in memory. Based on an actual voyage, Hell Around the Horn is a story of survival and the human spirit against overwhelming odds.
Praise for Hell Around the Horn:
Rick Spilman brings alive the rough and tumble world of the windjammer with authentic and well-chosen detail, in a voice that is at once historically authentic, yet fresh as a salty gale. One hand for yourself and one for the ship on this fast-paced and gripping ride. – Linda Collison, author of the Patricia MacPherson Nautical Adventures.
Battling against endless contrary gales, constantly struck with disaster and tragedy, the crew of the Lady Rebecca encountered the same privations that hundreds of unsung sailors endured. As well as a story that grips with gathering tension, this book memorializes the gallant windjammer sailors of a largely forgotten era – Joan Druett, award winning nautical historian, novelist and author of Tupaia
A much neglected period of sailing history is brought to life by Spilman’s fast-moving narrative and apt use of fact and detail. – Alaric Bond, author of the Fighting Sail series of novels.

Flashfire: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels) by Richard Stark
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, United States, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Mystery, Hard-Boiled, Contemporary Fiction, Crime
B etween Parker’s 1961 debut and his return in the late 1990s, the world of crime changed considerably. Now fake IDs and credit cards had to be purchased from specialists; increasingly sophisticated policing made escape and evasion tougher; and, worst of all, money had gone digital–the days of cash-stuffed payroll trucks were long gone. But cash isn’t everything: Flashfire and Firebreak find Parker going after, respectively, a fortune in jewels and a collection of priceless paintings. In Flashfire, Parker’s in West Palm Beach, competing with a crew that has an unhealthy love of explosions; when things go sour, Parker finds himself shot and trapped–and forced to rely on a civilian to survive. Firebreak takes Parker to a palatial Montana “hunting lodge” where a dot-com millionaire hides a gallery of stolen old masters–which will fetch Parker a pretty penny if his team can just get it past the mansion’s tight security. The forests of Montana are an inhospitable place for a heister when well-laid plans fall apart, but no matter how untamed the wilderness, Parker’s guaranteed to be the most dangerous predator around. “Like all of Stark’s Parker novels, Firebreak is a brutal yet compelling glimpse into the amoral world of crime and revenge.”–Booklist “The action [in Flashfire] is nonstop. . . . The awful fascination in these Parker tales comes from knowing the protagonist will always do whatever is necessary to protect himself and to achieve his goals.”–Wall Street Journal

A nyone alive in the eighteenth century would have known that “the longitude problem” was the thorniest scientific dilemma of the day-and had been for centuries. Lacking the ability to measure their longitude, sailors throughout the great ages of exploration had been literally lost at sea as soon as they lost sight of land. Thousands of lives, and the increasing fortunes of nations, hung on a resolution. The scientific establishment of Europe-from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton-had mapped the heavens in both hemispheres in its certain pursuit of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution-a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had ever been able to do on land. Longitude is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest, and of Harrison’s forty-year obsession with building his perfect timekeeper, known today as the chronometer. Full of heroism and chicanery, it is also a fascinating brief history of astronomy, navigation, and clockmaking, and opens a new window on our world.

From Publishers Weekly:
Women who dye their hair blonde may think twice before heading to the salon after reading Frasier’s (Hush) enthralling thriller about a serial killer who plucks the eyes out of his young blonde victims and grafts rose stems onto their fingers-all in an effort to create the perfect woman. Minneapolis FBI agent Mary Cantrell has a personal interest in the latest string of murders taking place in her hometown. The killer may very well be an old high school classmate named Gavin Hitchcock, who was convicted of raping and murdering her best friend and then released after serving nine years in prison. But when the abductions persist even after Gavin is returned to custody, Mary’s sister, Gillian, a local cop who’s befriended Gavin and believes him to be innocent, goes undercover to trap the real killer. Some vivid autopsy scenes may turn the stomachs of the squeamish, but there’s a lot more to this clever intrigue than graphic police procedures. Indeed, one of Frasier’s many strengths is her ability create characters and relationships that are as compelling as the mystery itself. From the estranged Cantrell sisters and their broad-minded mother to Mary’s handsome partner and the troubled Gavin, Frasier’s well-rounded characters will linger with readers long after the killer is caught.

A riveting investigation of the brutal murders of two Dartmouth professors –– a book that, like In Cold Blood, reveals the chilling reality behind a murder that captivated the nation. On a cold night in January 2001, the idyllic community of Dartmouth College was shattered by the discovery that two of its most beloved professors had been hacked to death in their own home. Investigators searched helplessly for clues linking the victims, Half and Susanne Zantop, to their murderer or murderers. A few weeks later, across the river, in the town of Chelsea, Vermont, police cars were spotted in front of the house of high school senior Robert Tulloch. The police had come to question Tulloch and his best friend, Jim Parker. Soon , the town discovered the incomprehensible reality that Tulloch and Parker, two of Chelsea’s brightest and most popular sons, were now fugitives, wanted for the murders of Half and Susanne Zantop. Authors Mitchell Zuckoff and Dick Lehr provide a vivid explication of a murder that captivated the nation, as well as dramatic revelations about the forces that turned two popular teenagers into killers. Judgement Ridge conveys a deep appreciation for the lives (and the devastating loss) of Half and Susanne Zantop, while also providing a clear portrait of the killers, their families, and their community –and, perhaps, a warning to any parent about what evil may lurk in the hearts of boys.

Megan is the harried but happy stay-at-home mother of three little girls living in a small town. Her life implodes when her youngest daughter, Emma, disappears on her third birthday.
Two years later, Megan is preparing to commemorate Emma’s birthday and the anniversary of her kidnapping, compelled to keep her name alive in the minds of her community and her family. Her commitment to Emma, however, borderlines on obsession as she follows the families of little girls who look like the daughter she lost.
Her obsession with finding Emma has distanced Megan from both friends and family. Her two older daughters are resentful of her relentless and fruitless search for their sister, and her husband pleads with her to accept that Emma is gone so that the family can move on with their lives.
Meanwhile, in the same small town, Jack is beginning to question his wife’s secrecy about their adored granddaughter, Emmie. As Dottie slips into dementia and becomes increasingly protective over Emmie, he can’t help but wonder if there could be a dark secret that Dottie is keeping from him.
Jack and Megan’s worlds finally intersect at the town carnival, when Megan snaps a photograph of a little girl on her grandfather’s shoulders.

H e had to keep moving, that the man instinctively knew. He had to get away, from the rioting, the lawlessness, the killing. Away from the brutal gangs that ruled the highways. Then there was the boy that he found along the way, an orphan with no place to go. He couldn’t leave the child behind; that would be murder. Together they had to make their way across the razed landscape of post collapse America, west to where there was safety, a chance to begin again. If only they survived the journey.
Excerpt: Man had quickly degenerated to the animal instincts of the species and numerous bloody examples could be seen anywhere one looked. For many there were no more limits in this new world as it had only been the law that kept them from robbing or killing or raping each other, and the law was now gone. Only anarchy remained. Rotting murdered corpses littered his street like so much uncollected garbage. The smell was something of nightmares. It was like some bad science fiction movie but all too real. If it had been a movie the man would have found it laughable and changed the channel.
Excerpt: All around the nation it was the same. The rioting and killing started in the densely populated urban areas but quickly spilled into the suburbs and then out into the countryside, the blood following the line of the highways like water obeying gravity. The mob ruled and the mob wanted blood. Now they would have it.

* *From the author of ‘Salt of the Earth’ and ‘An Opportunity for Resentment’**
If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for? If you could go anywhere in time, who would you want to meet?
Toby Riordan receives the gifts of a lifetime — and pays the ultimate price in a loss of someone he holds dear for each gift. In an alcohol fueled depression, sunk as low as a man can go, he calls out to the darkness for someone to hear his pain and help him. When all he perceives is silence, he decides to strike out at the man he blames for the ills of his world — the Carpenter of Nazareth, Jesus the Christ.
Toby lands in the middle of Nazareth of the first century — and meets the young Yeshua ben David. But the closer he gets to the young man, the more he finds that maybe divinity isn’t a fairy tale. That in losing his past, he just might acquire his future. And that finding his faith may be as easy as accepting that he was never really alone to begin with.
‘The Savior’ is the first book in a trilogy of time travel in history and faith. Book two, ‘The Apostle’, is tentatively scheduled for release in 2014. Book three, ‘The Bodhi Tree’ is tentatively scheduled for release in 2015.

Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels by J. Warner Wallace
Genre(s): Christian Books & Bibles, Theology, Religion & Spirituality, Christianity, Apologetics
W ritten by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Sherer, Merry Christmas, Alex Cross by James Patterson, The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling and a handful of others.

“White Heat” is a riveting read of mystery, much recommended.

Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, Romance, Historical Fiction, Historical Romance
‘ All the drama and sensuality of an historical romance, plus a sensitivity to the realities of life in a very different time and world…’ Ursula Le Guin
In 406 BC, to seal a tenuous truce, the young Roman Caecilia is wedded to Vel Mastarna, an Etruscan nobleman from the city of Veii. The fledgling Republic lies only twelve miles across the Tiber from its neighbour, but the cities are from opposing worlds so different are their customs and beliefs. Leaving behind a righteous Rome, Caecilia is determined to remain true to Roman virtues while living among the sinful Etruscans. Instead she finds herself tempted by a hedonistic culture which offers pleasure and independence to women as well as an ancient religion that gives her a chance to delay her destiny. Yet Mastarna and his people also hold dark secrets and, as war looms, Caecilia discovers that Fate is not so easy to control and that she must finally choose where her allegiance lies.
Exploring themes of sexuality, destiny versus self-determination and tolerance versus prejudice, The Wedding Shroud is historical fiction at its best which vividly brings Ancient Rome and Etruria to life while accenting the lives of women in ancient history.

Facebook House: Insider tales of Mark Zuckerberg and his empire’s tumultuous first days by Judy Fusco
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Professionals & Academics, Business, Business & Investing, Biography & History, Company Profiles, Biographies & Primers, Company Histories
P rovidential festivities and rituals take place at Facebook House the week before Mark Zuckerberg and the founders of Facebook move in. These mystical events would play a pivotal role in launching the social network company during its early days. At this house, these first Facebook friends cultivate the “War, work, and Play” ethic that propels the site to the first million-member mark and helps it survive the tumultuous first days of Zuckerberg’s world empire. Also, during their serendipitous stay at this California mansion, the prodigious computer hackers make a near-fatal error that compromises the security and future of the site.
Join the author, Judy Fusco, in this previously-untold, compelling narrative of Facebook House, as she weaves together fascinating, real-life, insider tales of the founders of Facebook. Take a look into the secret lives of many Silicon Valley kingpins, and the mysterious house that became headquarters to the social networking startup that changed the world. This is not the Accidental Billionaires-type account of the early days of Facebook, dependent only on the stories of bitter ex-business partners, imagined motives and conjecture. In this alternative, Facebook history, readers enjoy up-close interactive experiences with the main Facebook players and real-life glimpses into the lives and community that launched the company. Follow Mark Zuckerberg, Sean Parker and Dustin Moskovitz in this vivid Facebook House account of the dynamics that can transform wild dreams into reality.
This book is a blend of the best traits of “The Social Network” and “The Facebook Effect” in a fresh, entertaining, quick read. A book you won’t want to put down and that will inspire you to reflect – long after you put it down – on your own desires and dreams.
According to Judy Fusco, author of Facebook House, “In recent years I’ve had the opportunity of closely watching a transformational idea take shape around my dining room table, as a team of young entrepreneurs took a dream and unveiled it to the world. This social revolution has made a difference in the lives of over one billion members and in the events of nations.”
“It seems,” she says, “as if destiny brought these social revolutionaries to my house for a brief season and a great purpose. Perhaps, too, the mystique surrounding the house played a significant role in launching the global invasion of social networking and in propelling the Facebook founders to world renown. By taking a look through a window of time–a window I and many others have called Facebook House–we can listen and learn from the carriers of this grand idea, and in their lives we can find inspiration that can shape our own destinies.”

DUGAN THOUGHT SOMALI PIRATES WERE BAD NEWS. THEN IT GOT WORSE.
In the wake of his best-selling thriller Deadly Straits, newcomer R.E. McDermott is back with an action-packed sequel.
As Tom Dugan and Alex Kairouz, his partner and best friend, struggle to ransom their ship and crew from murderous Somali pirates, things take a turn for the worse. A US Navy contracted tanker with a full load of jet fuel is also hijacked, not by garden variety pirates, but by terrorists with links to Al Qaeda, changing the playing field completely.
With a link between piracy and terrorism now in play, the US and British goverments order the halt of all negotiations for captive ships, and enraged pirates ratchet up the mistreatment of captive crews. When a crewman is murdered in front of him on a live video feed, a frustrated Dugan starts his own rescue operation, only to stumble across something far more sinister — a rogue salvage operation for a long lost weapon of mass destruction. Isolated at sea on an old tanker previously destined for the ship breakers, Dugan and his hastily assembled little force of Russian mercenaries find themselves the last line of defense between the world and a terrifying bio-weapon.
Weaving historical fact with speculative fiction, Deadly Coast takes the reader from London board rooms into the very real world of modern day pirates — and their victims.
Reader Comments (Excerpts from Amazon reviews. Read full reviews below.)
I stumbled upon McDermott’s work via an Amazon recommendation. He’s an equal with WEB Griffin (one of my favorites), Cussler, and Clancy. You won’t be disappointed.
Brian
A rip-roaring thriller!
Captain Chris
As a Clancy/Griffin fan, I was skeptical, but the book came through as described. I really enjoyed it.
Indiver
I was blown away! Right up there with Tom Clancy and WEB Griffin.
MCole
Mr. McDermott knows his subject, intimately. Everything rings absolutely true. It’s like early Clancy.
Ross G. Gauld
McDermott just gets better and better. As good as Clancy in his early years (which were his best), with characters that are believable and a plot as modern as today.
James A. Kennedy
An excellent effort. In the style of Cussler, and every bit as interesting.
Douginarizona
Up 2 nights in a row until 2 AM. It equals Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler.
Thomas Rears
I am a huge fan of Tom Clancy, and this work fits right in.
Lesley Martin
In a league with Cussler, Wilber Smith, and MacLean. A great storyteller.
Vinu Raman
In Deadly Coast, McDermott continues his wonderfully timely, sobering exploration of the world of maritime piracy in and around the Gulf of Aden. A scintillating mix of brigands, treasure hunters, Spetznaz, US Navy — and Tom Dugan’s crew of unlikely heroes.
Finback
Couldn’t wait to read the next page! McDermott ranks with Clancy, Silva, Flynn, and CJ Box.
LTC Mike S.
If you like Cussler you’ll love these books! Great action, and great story lines I couldn’t put down. Can’t wait for the next book!
Actionfan
The character development is excellent and the plot totally credible. The pace is rapid and steady as a heartbeat. And in a fashion on which McDermott seems to hold the patent, revenge is extracted – deliciously.
Budd Cardone
I’m a voracious reader, and follow many authors. Deadly Coast will not disappoint fans of popular authors such as Clancy, Cussler, Matthew Reilly, etc.
Greg Bell
Deadly Coast is just as good as the best Cussler and better than most other sea stories.
Neptune
I recommend all action junkies add another author to the list with Flynn, Griffin, Cussler, Clancy, and now, McDermott.
Peppi
McDermott hit a home run with Deadly Straits and he turns around and does it again with Deadly Coast. I have a few authors that I like and read everything they write. Specifically Clancy, Cussler, and Dale Brown. Now I have another.

Finding Rebecca: A Novel of Love and the Holocaust by Eoin Dempsey
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Historical, Historical Fiction, World Literature, Jewish
N ow Available Exclusively on Amazon
How far would you go for the one you love?
Christopher would always be there for Rebecca no matter what it took, from the beaches of Jersey to the hell of the holocaust and Auschwitz.
The prisoners in Auschwitz called it Canada, the land of unimaginable riches, where the last possessions of those who perished in the gas chambers were gathered and counted. Christopher is the new head of Canada, the ‘Dollar King.’ He is the one who controls the river of dirty money flowing through the camp. But Christopher is on a different mission. He is not in Auschwitz to serve the Reich, but to find Rebecca, lost somewhere inside the sprawling system of concentration camps set up to murder the innocent victims of the holocaust.
They were six years old when they meet on the island of Jersey in 1924. Christopher, recently arrived from Germany with his sister, and grieving father, and Rebecca, born and raised on the island, the daughter of an abusive father and alcoholic mother. Their lives would never be the same. When Rebecca runs away as a teenager to England to escape her parents Christopher thinks he has lost her forever, but nothing can keep them apart, not her parents, or the fiancée she brings back with her from England, or even the war clouds gathering over Europe. When World War II comes to Jersey with the Nazi invaders, Christopher tries to hide Rebecca’s Jewish roots, but along with millions of other victims of the holocaust, Rebecca is swallowed up by the evils of the Nazi regime.
As Christopher searches for Rebecca he finds the noose around his own neck tightening, as he struggles to not only maintain his cover, but also the grip on his soul amongst the melee of death and corruption that is daily currency in the camp. Christopher knows that one misstep by him will mean not only the end of his own life but surely that of Rebecca’s also. But Christopher finds that his position in the camp as the man in charge of the money in the corrupt world of Auschwitz affords him opportunities, and that sometimes the mission, and the life that fate leads us to is not necessarily the one we had in mind.
Meticulously researched, Finding Rebecca is a searing testament to the ultimate bravery in the face of unspeakable evil and the power of love and forgiveness.

Past the arch imported from italy, past the two wide marble pillars with great veins of white, and on down the hallway lit with grand chandeliers, leaned a man against the wall covered in shadow, a cigarette peeking out of his mouth, illuminating his face in a glow of red, his eyes covered by a black fedora. He wore a powerful grin. Chuckling, the man in the hall took a long drag, took his time with the exhale of effortless smoke rings. When he spoke, he did so without revealing his eyes. “Mr. Johnson, I believe. Yes, it is you, isn’t it? I should have known it would be you who would start the riot. Please, I would consider it a personal offense if you left before dinner arrived.” His voice then took a dark turn as he uttered the malevolent words, “Sit back down.”
Mr. Johnson’s eye’s opened wide as he recognized the face in the hall, that nameless smile. “You’ve been here the whole time? You, sir, led me here in good faith.”
“Good faith,” spoke the man in the hall, “You don’t know the meaning of faith! I assure you, you have not an inkling on the matter. And as for ‘good’, Mr. Johnson, you are nothing of the kind, not one spec of goodness hangs about your loathsome person, your horrendous ideals, your shot ‘em in the back business practices or your exploitative mannerism and back room dealings. No, sir, do not point your finger at me! No, sir, do not try to raise your voice! For once in your life you will be silenced. Even the tycoon of a stolen empire deserves an iota of humility before he dies!”

Suddenly for Laila, it’s 1969 again. She’s only seventeen, and she’s left her sheltered home in Long Island for college in Connecticut. Amid protests of the Vietnam War, she’s tempted by the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll that rule her generation. Laila gets swept up in a deceptive love triangle with two older locals and initiated into their unethical hippie family. Too late she realizes her search to belong has led to tragedy.
Laila must now juggle the demands of her perplexed husband and her baby boomer past forcing her to make choices that endanger her survival and challenge her conscience.
She learns that the lines between right and wrong are often blurred, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.
