What he received was an education about a wild animal that seized his heart, stole his head, and wormed deep into his imagination. As his outdoors learning curve advanced, grizzly bears topped the list; but it was a winding road from first grizzly sighting in 1965 until first printing of his book, Learning To Talk Bear, the 35-year roadmap from total ignorance to at least a small measure of understanding and inspiration. One cannot read Roland Cheek’s above take on grizzly bears and doubt the guy’s sincerity. But one should realize he’s not alone:

Learning To Talk Bear, by Roland Cheek is a must read for anyone interested in the current state of affair of the American grizzly. Cheek combines his vast outdoor experience as an outfitter in Montana with solid research to provide a thoroughly readable and enjoyable book. It reminded me of two other books, John McPhee’s Coming Into the Country about Alaska, and Sebastian Junger’s Perfect Storm. I read Learning To Talk Bear while vacationing in Yellowstone and felt much more in tune while in the backyard of Ursus arctos horribilis.
