************************
At one time, Decklan Holmes may have considered herself well and fully inoculated against the intrigue of abnormal mysteries. She was a prominent detective with the Caplan City Police Department, the child of a suicide victim, and the survivor of one of the most notorious catastrophes in Caplan history. Yet, in the wake of another horrifying accident, Decklan encounters an all-too-familiar man who forces her to confront a forgotten past and reexamine everything she has come to believe concerning myth, legend, and the nature of reality. Now, caught in a mystery of the supernatural variety, the feisty detective is quickly learning to question everything… but, as it turns out, “everything” might not quite cover it.

(Excerpt)
Falling in love with an angel is like falling in love with a supernova. It’s as cosmic as it is unrealistic. You can be physically shaken by its splendor, or so wholly debased by your own sense of awe that you weep to think it’s anything but a dream. You can tell yourself that simply being aware of it means something profound, something real. You can rationalize it all you want. But in the end, you’re bound to learn that this celestial body can never love you back. Not the way you need it to.
So yes, Decklan knew that falling in love with an angel was absurd. Maybe even a little insane.
But falling in love with a demon? That was something else entirely.

The Great Leap Forward by Armand Burke
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Satire, Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Thrillers, Spy Stories & Tales of Intrigue
N o. 1 Satire on Amazon (Top 100 Free Books in Kindle Store – April 10 –11, 2013).
If you enjoy Kurt Vonnegut, Catch-22, Chuck Palahniuk, the Illuminatus trilogy or the Fu Manchu novels of Sax Rohmer, you might enjoy THE GREAT LEAP FORWARD – a post-modern comic fantasy that defies categorization.
The year is 1978. China is an isolated empire of conspiracy, deception and delusion.
From Radio Beijing comes the astonishing announcement: China will unilaterally disarm. Is this a Great Leap Forward for mankind–or a plot to take over the world?
Into this surreal landscape steps Number Five, a master spy of undisclosed nationality. What he finds in China is so shocking, so strange, so far beyond the usual categories of fact or fiction, that the story of his mission must be passed off as fantasy for the next thirty-five years. It’s as if Kafka, Borges and Wittgenstein, after binging on Fu Manchu novels and the Illuminatus trilogy, had decided to write a spy novel, with a little help from Lewis Carroll.
Die-hard fans of thrillers and spy novels beware: Don’t buy this book unless you’re prepared to suspend your expectations in favor of a story that’s funny, literary, and trans-genre’d!
Be sure to use the Look Inside feature above to sample what the book is like and see if you might enjoy it.

The Maze – The Lost Labyrinth (Suspense Thriller) by Jason Brannon
Genre(s): Christian Books & Bibles, Literature & Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Religion & Spirituality, Fiction, Mystery, Religious Fiction, Christianity, Christian Fiction, Fantasy, Suspense
A near death experience transports Jamie Burroughs into The Maze, a realm built by angels and demons and filled with traps and riddles for those haunted by their mistakes.
For Jamie, The Maze becomes a terrifying journey through a world of darkness where his soul and the lives of those he loves hangs in the balance. With his family in danger and his soul in peril, Jamie is forced to reevaluate the kind of man he truly is as he struggles to escape The Maze before it’s too late.
Praise for The Maze
“Jason Brannon shows us a place of reckoning and judgments, of creatures that wait to ensnare us. The Maze is a novel of damnation and deliverance, of corridors fortified with death and spirituality. I found a bit of myself in The Maze.” ~ Steven Lloyd, author of The Wooden Box
“From his style, you’d think Jason Brannon was the dark double of Ray Bradbury. He cares more about character and realism than most writers I’ve read and his plots flow like well-orchestrated music. Indeed, Brannon’s writing has a classical feel, reminiscent of the best traditional work in the genre, even when he’s going for gut-wrenching terror and torture in-extremis.” ~ Michael Arnzen, International Horror Guild Award winning author of Grave Markings (Dell Abyss)
“Warning! The Maze may get inside your head — and stay there.” ~ Harry Shannon, author of Night of the Beast
“Brannon’s work reminds me of the glory days of The Twilight Zone, when it was in black and white and carried bylines like Beaumont and Matheson. Often surreal, sometimes disturbing and sometimes enlightening, there’s real substance in his tales that few of his contemporaries can match.” ~ Mike Oliveri, Bram Stoker Award Winning Author of Deadliest of the Species
“It is a rare treat to find a modern writer whose work is truly a mirror of the darkest corners of the world we all share. Every one of his haunting stories is infused with clear ideas and startling notions submerged in a straightforward and engaging prose. His visions linger with you long after the book has been closed.” ~ Stephen Susco, Screenwriter (The Grudge, The Grudge 2, Pulse, Red)

Light and Shadows by Michael Porter
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Satire, Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction
I n this dark comedy, Ezra Gentile, a mid-40s sales manager, goes to work for a tight-fisted, selfish owner, Howard Goodson, to manage Thoroughgood Studios, a faltering chain of family-owned Milwaukee wedding photography studios. Ezra has bounced around the business world with limited success, and although Goodson hires him on the cheap, Ezra sees this as an opportunity with potential.
Goodson wants to expand the chain, putting Gentile under enormous pressure to increase sales and devise a new training system. And yet, the foundation of the wedding business — the dream of everlasting love — is to Ezra a sham. A messy divorce has left him cynical and fearful about romance. He needs this job.
At work, Ezra’s efforts to train the existing sales force are generally rejected, as the staff continues to follow their own idiosyncratic methods and outmoded sales techniques, no matter how flawed, unethical, or manipulative. This often results in unintentionally hilarious situations, like the outraged mother of the bride who accused them of “fartography,” because their “work stinks!”
Since the average bride knows little about wedding photography,Thoroughgood Studios gives them as little as possible. The studio’s plagued by numerous problems – poor photography quality, poorly paid photographers, poor management policies, and inept salespeople, which lead to continuous customer complaints.
All too soon, Ezra discovers he has joined the photo studio from hell. Although their sales presentations paint Thoroughgood Studios as the perfect photography studio, the photographers show up late for weddings and upset the bride, and miss or mess up important shots. When the bride gets the photos, she’s appalled.
Like the company he has come to rescue, Ezra’s personal life is in shambles, and his divorce has left him with large debts. He has long given up on his own dreams of love. Ezra owes money to his ex-wife. During a visit to help her with a home repair, she falls, hits her head, and lapses into a coma, blamed on Ezra’s clumsy efforts to revive her. The police suspect he tried to kill her to save on alimony, and Ezra is dogged by an annoyingly inquisitive detective, which confirms his beliefs about the futility of change.
Paradoxically, Ezra’s ongoing spiritual discussions with a co-worker who has befriended him give new perspective on his ex’s coma. He also has a series of strange, unexplained visionary dreams while asleep. The conversations with his friend gradually causes Ezra to re-examine his relationships in more detail and question the direction of his life….
Alas, Howard Goodson doesn’t want to spend a penny to upgrade anything. Sometimes the employees are inept, other times they try to do their best. But everyone’s underpaid and under-appreciated. Typically, Howard ignores the quality problem and general insanity around the studios because of his central and overriding philosophy – THE AG FACTOR: He only acts when the aggravation from a problem is higher than the cost of changing it.
Howard’s only in it for himself and the money and really doesn’t care about anyone or anything else. If there’s a problem, the company tries to brush it under the carpet and spend as little as possible to remedy the situation. This makes customers even madder. But Howard doesn’t care because they only buy wedding photography once, and there are always plenty of new customers.
Howard is seeking an investor to expand his company. When a rogue financier with reputed gangland ties in Vegas, pretends to invest in the company’s expansion as a ploy to take over the studio, Ezra Gentile discovers personal resources he was not aware he possessed. Finally seizing control of his own dreams and fears, Ezra regains the mysterious woman he thought had been lost to him forever.

Spiritual Anorexia: How Contemporary Worship Is Starving the Church by Doug Erlandson
Genre(s): Christian Books & Bibles, Worship & Devotion, Rites & Ceremonies, Arts & Photography, Music, Musical Genres, Religious & Sacred Music, Christian, Religion & Spirituality, Christianity, Clergy, Worship
I n Spiritual Anorexia: How Contemporary Worship Is Starving the Church, Dr. Doug Erlandson presents a balanced but devastating critique of the contemporary-style worship model that the modern church has adopted and shows how this type of worship deprives Christians of the feast that true corporate worship should be
Drawing from personal experience and extensive research into the history of Christian worship, Dr. Erlandson analyzes the motivations for this type of worship and assesses its strengths and weaknesses. He argues that corporate worship should be a reverential dramatic presentation of the Gospel, with the theme of the redemption of God’s people and the rejuvenation and restoration of creation.
Historically, Christian worship has included certain distinctive elements that help make this presentation. These include the call to worship, the recitation of creeds, readings from each of the major divisions of Scripture, prayers, confession of sin and absolution, Christ-centered preaching, the Lord’s Supper, and the exhortation and benediction. By use of concrete examples Erlandson shows how contemporary-style worship either eliminates these entirely or includes them in a truncated fashion; thus, the elements that made traditional worship a true feast have disappeared. In their place the church has substituted slick musical performances and therapy-style preaching that blurs the central message of the Gospel.
Erlandson examines contemporary praise choruses that have replaced the theologically-rich hymns, demonstrating that the problem with the lyrics is not so much bad theology but lack of meaningful content. The music is often hard for the congregation to follow, having been written for well-trained musicians and not for congregational use. The greatest problem arises from treating the music as a performance by the worship team rather than as congregational worship.
Spiritual Anorexia also contrasts the historical role of preaching as the proclamation of the Gospel with various contemporary models (e.g., the moralistic, therapeutic, and teaching models) and shows how these models deprive the congregation of spiritual nourishment.
A chapter of particular interest is the one on physical symbolism, which argues that by doing away with symbols such as the cross and the pulpit the contemporary church has substituted the sterility of the modern auditorium for the rich symbolism of the historical church building.
The final chapter of Spiritual Anorexia examines the justifications typically given for contemporary-style worship, shows why they are unpersuasive, and argues that whatever value it might have is far outweighed by the spiritual starvation that results.
Throughout, Dr. Erlandson challenges the church to worship with the excellence of which it is capable so that it will truly offer its worship to the glory of God and will experience the feast that corporate worship should be.

The Miracle Inspector is one of the few novels that everyone should read, it’s a powerful novel that’s masterfully written and subtly complex. SciFi and Fantasy Books
A dystopian thriller set in the near future. England has been partitioned and London is an oppressive place where poetry has been forced underground, theatres and schools are shut, and women are not allowed to work outside the home. A young couple, Lucas and Angela, try to escape from London – with disastrous consequences.
In its feminist angle, The Miracle Inspector is reminiscent of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Smith has an extraordinarily rich imagination that never fails to surprise and delight. Huffpost Books.

The Great Leap Forward by Armand Burke
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Satire, Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Thrillers, Spy Stories & Tales of Intrigue
I magine that Kafka, Borges and Wittgenstein, after binging on Fu Manchu novels and the Illuminatus trilogy, sat down to write a spy thriller, with a little help from Lewis Carroll. Set the novel in China in 1978–an isolated empire of conspiracy, deception and delusion–and tune in to Radio Beijing for the astonishing announcement: China will unilaterally disarm. Is this a Great Leap Forward for mankind–or a plot to take over the world?
Into this surreal landscape, this garden of forking paths, steps Number Five, a master spy of undisclosed nationality. What he finds in China is so shocking, so strange, so far beyond the usual categories of fact or fiction, that he returns a changed man, and the story of his mission must be passed off as fantasy for thirty-five years.
Chairman (now called Chairperson) Mao has passed on, leaving the nation torn between the Gang of Four and the shadowy Red Lotus Clique–and buzzing with rumors of a secret weapon to be unveiled when the disarmament is complete. Five has two weeks to save the West from annihilation. He finds himself stumbling into a shadow show of Foreign Devils, Puppet Emperors, Eunuchs, Revisionist Bandits and Running Dogs of the Imperialists. With help from the beautiful Wild Thing, he gropes his way toward the truth; but first he must face down the dreaded Chinese Olympic ping pong team and the mysterious Doctor who may be the mastermind of all this anarchy.
Die-hard fans of thrillers and spy novels beware: Don’t buy this book unless you’re prepared to suspend your expectations in favor of a story that’s funny, literary and trans-genre’d. On one level this is a spy novel, on another a literary and political satire, on another a philosophical investigation into the limits of knowledge and personal identity. Espionage (as John Le Carré taught us) is about deception, disguise, and the attempt to wrestle knowledge from ambiguous and deceptive appearances.
Does Five ever find the truth? The history of China in the past 25 years proves that given enough time, the surreal becomes the real. Who in 1978 could have foreseen that the Chinese Communist Party would become the world’s leading exponent of capitalism? Who could have predicted an opera about Richard Nixon?
Fans of the Fu Manchu novels by Sax Rohmer, the fictions of Jorge Luis Borges (particularly The Garden of Forking Paths), the film The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolocci, and Theravada Buddhism (particularly the Milinda Panha or 100 Questions of King Menander to Nagasena) might find a special interest in this novel.

How much would a father sacrifice for his child?
Nineteen years ago, Indiana police found the body of a young girl, burned beyond recognition and buried in the woods. They arrested George Calhoun for murdering his daughter, and his wife testified against him at the trial. The jury convicted him. Now his appeals have been exhausted, and his execution is just a few weeks away.
George said he didn’t do it. That the body isn’t his little Angelina. But that’s all he’s ever said – no other defense, no other explanation.
Dani Trumball, an attorney for the Help Innocent Prisoners Project, wants to believe him. After all, there was no forensic evidence that the body in the woods was George’s daughter. But if the girl isn’t Angelina, then who is it? And what happened to the Calhouns’ missing daughter?
For nineteen years, George Calhoun has stayed silent. But that’s about to change, and the story he tells Dani–if it’s true–changes everything.

FLYING DRUNK: The True Story of a Northwest Airlines Flight, Three Drunk Pilots, and One Man’s Fight for Redemption by Joseph Balzer
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Health Fitness & Dieting, Addiction & Recovery, Alcoholism, History, Military, Aviation, World, Professional & Technical, Transportation, Commercial, Recovery
M arch 8, 1990: An intoxicated three-man crew, including Flight Engineer Joseph Balzer, fly a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 with 91 passengers aboard from Fargo, North Dakota to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
July 25, 1990: All three pilots stand trial for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol; all three are convicted and sent to federal prison.
July 26, 1990 – present: Joe Balzer fights for redemption and to regain all that he has lost. Flying Drunk is his story.
Since he was a young boy, Joe Balzer dreamed of flying. He pursued his goal with a vigorous passion and earned his pilot licenses, piling up hours of flight time with a wide variety of planes and jets with one overarching goal: to one day fly for a major airline. But Joe had a problem. He was an alcoholic and refused to admit to himself that he had a problem.
His alcoholism caught up with him in March 1990, when Joe was arrested with two other pilots for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol. His world began crumbling around him and his new marriage faced the ultimate test. He lost his promising career and his dignity. Every major media outlet, including The New York Times, Newsweek, and Time Magazine covered the shocking story for the stunned American flying public. The trial that followed drained Joe’s life’s savings and federal prison nearly broke him. Flying Drunk is Joe’s bittersweet and thoroughly chilling memoir of his twisted journey to a Federal courtroom, his time in the notorious Federal penitentiary system in Atlanta, and his struggle to recapture all that he held dear.
Today, Joe is a recovering alcoholic, celebrating more than nineteen years of sobriety. The long road back from perdition led him to American Airlines, where good people and a great organization recognized a talented pilot who had cleaned up his act and was ready to fly again, safely.
Flying Drunk is an incredible journey of the human spirit, from childhood to hell, and back again. Everyone should read and heed its message of hope and redemption. No one who does will ever forget it.
About the Author: Joe Balzer is a pilot for American Airlines with more than 15,000 hours of flight experience. He has a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Education and is also an inspirational speaker, traveling around the country speaking to pilots and other groups on the dangers of alcohol and other addictions, bringing his audience to laughter and tears with his powerful message of hope. Joe lives in Tennessee with his wife Deborah and their two children. Flying Drunk is his first book.
REVIEWS
“Balzer was part of the infamous three-man crew that in 1990 piloted a Northwest Airlines commercial flight from Fargo, ND, to Minneapolis while intoxicated. All three lost their jobs and flying licenses and served time in federal prison. Driven by his faith in God and the support of his family and friends, Balzer struggled to overcome his addiction. Today, sober for nearly two decades, he flies for American Airlines. Listeners will be captivated by his tale of redemption, which he engagingly reads. Recommended for those dealing with their own or a loved one’s addiction issues.”Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ. Lib., Parkersburg

The Famous Union by Michael Meyer
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Satire, Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Comic Fiction
A ROLLICKING ROMP THROUGH THE HALLS OF ACADEMIA, THE FAMOUS UNION by Michael Meyer has readers saying that it has “flashes of Vonnegut,” that it is “an academic version of Catch 22,” that it “is a hoot!” and that it is “one of few books that has made me laugh out loud.”
Famous Union is a pretty little college with expensive fountains, cute coeds, and brand new artificial turf on the football field. It seems like the perfect place to work, but not all is as it seems, especially when bungling administrators create theater-of-the-absurd conditions in this once very proud institution of higher learning. Hampered by severe budgetary problems, the powers-that-be at Famous Union College create situations that bring about comical chaos for faculty and students alike. How will the often eccentric characters cope with the drastic changes suddenly thrust upon them, where compromise is a four-letter word? Famous Union College is a place where what is what is not.

But after a particularly unproductive day cluttered with nothing more than boredom, Bill Ferris finally had had it; he knew he had to get away, or else, so he ventured across campus to the college cafeteria for an early dinner.
“What’s the special today?” he asked the young coed who was on the ready to take his order.
“Buzzgetti.”
“What’s that?” asked Ferris.
“Buzzgetti.”
“What?” asked Ferris again.
“Buzzgetti,” said the young unsmiling coed, her face clearly demonstrating her growing impatience with the guy.
“Is that some type of local specialty. I’ve never heard of it,” said Bill Ferris.
“Buzzgetti,” the tortured young thing said, two octaves too loudly for the crowded cafeteria.
Bill Ferris, finally resigned to the fact that he was not about to get any further information from her, decided what the hell. “I’ll take a stab at it,” he said.
When his plate was finally handed over to him, Ferris sighed deeply, refraining purposely from uttering what he truly felt inside. What good would it do? What purpose would it serve? As he looked down at his plate of probably day-old spaghetti, most likely heated-over canned stuff, to boot, he was thinking that nothing around the place made any sense at all. The place had gone completely insane, crazy. Loco. It seemed more a lunatic asylum than a place of scholarly reflection and application.
But what a fitting end to his day, he also thought, as the tasteless special of the day churned around his intestines like worms squirming to their death on a sunburned sidewalk.

A View to Die For by Richard Houston
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Mystery Thriller & Suspense, Mystery, Cozy
I f you’re in the mood for a gripping mystery/ suspense book, then Richard Houston’s debut novel, “A View to Die For”, is the right choice for you. The author proves his talent by offering the readers an engaging plot, likeable characters and an intricate puzzle that will keep them on edge, because nothing is what it seems and discovering the real criminal is not an easy task.
Jacob Martin is an unemployed software engineer who lives with Fred, his beloved Golden Retriever, and dreams of becoming a novelist. When his mother calls to tell him that his sister, Megan, has been arrested for killing her fourth husband, Jake knows that he needs to take Fred and go to his sister’s rescue. For the local DA and sheriff everything is clear because Megan is known for collecting her husbands’ life insurance policies and the last one is worth a million dollars. Their mother insists Mike committed suicide, but this supposition might be very far from the truth. Jake is determined to take matters into his own hands and find the criminal before his family has even more to suffer. From illegal entry to computer hacking and surveillance camera sabotage, Jake is willing to do anything to prove Megan’s innocence.
“A View to Die For” is that kind of mystery novel that puts ordinary people in extraordinary situations, which makes you truly relate to the characters. My favorite was Jacob Martin, and not only because he is a dog person. Jake is witty, generous, loyal, he loves his family and is smarter than any detective. You can count on him to solve this case and clear his sister’s reputation. He makes a great team with Fred and is always concerned about the dog’s well-being, which is incredibly sweet. There’s no doubt you’ll love Jake from the very first pages.
Richard Houston knows how to build up suspense, so you will find this book impossible to put down. The good thing is that you’ll forget about everything for a couple of hours. The bad thing is that you’ll have to be patient until the author publishes the next novel in the Jacob Martin series. When you enjoy the first book so much, this never happens fast enough.

“ First, you gotta find the perfect bottle,” the Firebug rasped. “Too hard, and it wont bust when it hits the floor. Too thin, and it explodes on impact with the window, splashing you with the fuel mix and burning you to hell.”
Someone is setting fires in the Houston barrio, and Dr. Jack Montoya is the first intended victim. Is there some connection between the torching of his apartment and the gorgeous blonde from his past who appears at his clinic that same day? For sure, Reagan Hurley turns up the flames of his libido, but these days the beautiful firefighter is more interested in putting out conflagrations than fanning old sparks. Yet when a hotly contested mayoral race turns ugly, when Reagans life is threatened and Jacks career almost destroyed, when desire sizzles uncontrollably between them, it seems that no one will be able to
Fade the Heat.
