Stretch Marks: A Novel by Kimberly Stuart
Genre(s): Christian Books & Bibles, Literature & Fiction, Fiction, Chick-Lit, Contemporary Women, Mothers & Children, Religion & Spirituality, Contemporary Fiction, Christianity, Christian Fiction
M ia is a granola-eating, sensible shoe–wearing, carbon footprint–conscious twenty-something living in a multicultural neighborhood in Chicago. Her mother, Babs, is a stiletto-wearing Zsa Zsa Gabor type who works as an activities hostess on a Caribbean cruise line … and if you guessed there’s some tension there, you’d be right. Factor in an unexpected pregnancy and Mia’s idealistic boyfriend—Lars is such a visionary he doesn’t believe in the institution of marriage—and the mother-daughter relationship is, well, stretched very thin. As is Mia’s sanity when Babs shows up to … help.
Actually, Mia has a whole neighborhood of quirky characters who want to help, including her BFF Frankie, a magenta-haired librarian; Silas, the courtly gentleman of indeterminate age who lives downstairs; and Adam, proprietor of the corner grocery store where Mia shops. But it’s Adam—endearing, kind, possessed of a perfect smile and impeccable Persian manners—who ultimately charms Babs and rescues Mia from more than one mother-induced meltdown. Could it be that Mia and Babs might actually be able to get along?
With Kimberly Stuart’s trademark irreverent humor and a surprising and satisfying take on romance, Stretch Marks is an authentic but tender story about family, grace, and the importance of a good grocer.

The Last Madam: A Life in the New Orleans Underworld by Christine Wiltz
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Specific Groups, Crime & Criminals, History, Americas, United States, State & Local, Criminals, South
N orma Wallace grew up fast in the rough neighborhoods of New Orleans. In 1916, as an ambitious fifteen-year-old, she went to work as a street-walker in the French Quarter, but by 1920 was madam of what became one of the city’s most lavish brothels, an establishment frequented by politicians, movie stars, gangsters, and even the notoriously corrupt police force. For decades Norma flourished, a smart, glamorous, powerful woman whose scandalous life made front-page headlines. Her lovers ran the gamut from a bootlegger who shot her during a fight, to a famed bandleader, to the boy next door, thirty-nine years her junior, who became her fifth husband.
Norma knew all of the Crescent City’s dirty little secrets and used them to protect her own interests – she never got so much as a traffic ticket – until the early 1960s, when District Attorney Jim Garrison decided to clean up vice and corruption. After a jail stay, she went legitimate as successfully as she had gone criminal, with a lucrative restaurant business. To the end Norma maintained her independence, and surrendered only to an irrational, obsessive love, which ultimately led to her violent death.
In The Last Madam, author Christine Wiltz combines original research with Wallace’s personal memoirs to bring to life an era in New Orleans history rife with charm and decadence, and to reveal the colorful woman who reigned as its underworld queen.

M any etiquette books tell you what to do when attending a wedding, setting the table, asking for a promotion, introducing yourself at a party. This book looks at situations that break the rules of a ‘decent’ society with stories about the etiquette of obesity, dementia, infertility, arson, and others. We all have our rules, our moral codes, our lines that we won’t cross. It’s when we cross those lines that things get really interesting.

Barely in his twenties, Laurie has built himself an empire that encompasses a chic Manhattan boutique and a role on an obnoxious reality series. Part worldly sophisticate and part cheerful scatterbrain, Laurie is beautiful and extravagant; at nearly twice his age, Nicola is jaded and resolutely unglamorous. As Laurie’s burgeoning fame threatens to overwhelm him, Nicola finds herself struggling to keep him on solid ground.
When Laurie becomes obsessed with tracking down the designer of a mysterious coat, he drags Nicola along on a champagne-fueled quest that takes them from the New York catwalks to glittery Hollywood parties and swanky suites in Paris hotels. What begins as a lark takes an ominous turn when they uncover a decades-old mystery involving the murders of two young models. Along the way, the odd-couple camaraderie between Nicola and Laurie evolves into a fierce bond, which is put to the test when she must protect him from a pair of deadly threats: a mercurial fellow designer hell-bent on burying a dark secret, and an obsessive killer who has fixed his sights on Laurie.

Shadow People: how meth-driven crime is eating at the heart of rural America by Scott Thomas Anderson
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, True Accounts, Organized Crime, True Crime
L iterary Nonfiction. Sleepless and paranoid methamphetamine addicts often see “shadow people” in the darkest hours of the night. Yet it is the addicts themselves that cast a shadow over the most peaceful corners of America, driven in large numbers to commit fraud, identity theft, burglary, domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse, assault and murder.
In 2010, award-winning journalist Scott Thomas Anderson began to explore the link between crime and methamphetamine, spending sixteen months as an embedded reporter with rural county law enforcement agencies and traveling to dozens of small towns battling the epidemic across the United States. The result is SHADOW PEOPLE, an unflinching look at the havoc and heartache meth spawns in the open countryside–a window to how the drug is threatening America’s wide open country spaces, fueling crimes against citizens, breaking families apart, devastating innocent children and tearing away at the psyche of each community through which it spreads.
“A compelling and up-close look at one of the most corrosive issues that our communities face…this book is full of the kind of front-line reporting and gritty detail needed to illuminate the meth scourge.”–Greg Miller, National Security Report, The Washington Post

A nyone alive in the eighteenth century would have known that “the longitude problem” was the thorniest scientific dilemma of the day-and had been for centuries. Lacking the ability to measure their longitude, sailors throughout the great ages of exploration had been literally lost at sea as soon as they lost sight of land. Thousands of lives, and the increasing fortunes of nations, hung on a resolution. The scientific establishment of Europe-from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton-had mapped the heavens in both hemispheres in its certain pursuit of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution-a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had ever been able to do on land. Longitude is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest, and of Harrison’s forty-year obsession with building his perfect timekeeper, known today as the chronometer. Full of heroism and chicanery, it is also a fascinating brief history of astronomy, navigation, and clockmaking, and opens a new window on our world.

THEN LIKE THE BLIND MAN: Orbie’s Story by Freddie Owens Wegela
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Coming of Age, Literary, Literary Fiction
A storm is brewing in the all-but-forgotten backcountry of Kentucky. And, for young Orbie Ray, the swirling heavens may just have the power to tear open his family’s darkest secrets. Then Like The Blind Man: Orbie’s Story is the enthralling debut novel by Freddie Owens, which tells the story of a spirited wunderkind in the segregated South of the 1950s and the forces he must overcome to restore order in his world. Rich in authentic vernacular and evocative of a time and place long past, this absorbing work of magical realism offered up with a Southern twist will engage readers who relish the Southern literary canon, or any tale well told.
Nine-year-old Orbie already has his cross to bear. After the sudden death of his father, his mother Ruby has off and married his father’s coworker and friend Victor, a slick-talking man with a snake tattoo. Since the marriage, Orbie, his sister Missy, and his mother haven’t had a peaceful moment with the heavy-drinking, fitful new man of the house. Orbie hates his stepfather more than he can stand; this fact lands him at his grandparents’ place in Harlan’s Crossroads, Kentucky, when Victor decides to move the family to Florida without including him. In his new surroundings, Orbie finds little to distract him from Granpaw’s ornery ways and constant teasing jokes about snakes.
As Orbie grudgingly adjusts to life with his doting Granny and carping Granpaw, who are a bit too keen on their black neighbors for Orbie’s taste, not to mention their Pentecostal congregation of snake handlers, he finds his world views changing, particularly when it comes to matters of race, religion, and the true cause of his father’s death. He befriends a boy named Willis, who shares his love of art, but not his skin color. And, when Orbie crosses paths with the black Choctaw preacher, Moses Mashbone, he learns of a power that could expose and defeat his enemies, but can’t be used for revenge. When a storm of unusual magnitude descends, he happens upon the solution to a paradox that is both magical and ordinary. The question is, will it be enough?
Equal parts Hamlet and Huckleberry Finn, it’s a tale that’s both rich in meaning, timely in its social relevance, and rollicking with boyhood adventure. The novel mines crucial contemporary issues, as well as the universality of the human experience while also casting a beguiling light on boyhood dreams and fears. It’s a well-spun, nuanced work of fiction that is certain to resonate with lovers of literary fiction, particularly in the grand Southern tradition of storytelling.

A Death On The Wolf by G. M. Frazier
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Drama, United States, Genre Fiction, Coming of Age
W INNER in the Kindle Book Review’s 2012 “Best Indie Books” contest for literary fiction.
For Nelson Gody, the summer of 1969, the summer he would turn sixteen, began as all his past summers had. Life on his family’s small farm outside Bells Ferry, Mississippi, was safe and routine: chores, taking care of his little sister, working at a local gas station, swimming in the Wolf River with his best friend–his world was familiar and predictable. All that would change as young Nelson experiences his first love, wrestles with the secret his best friend has been hiding, and meets a mysterious stranger who appears one day on an exotic motorcycle called the Black Shadow. Capped by the devastating effects of hurricane Camille, the events of that summer ensured that life as Nelson knew it would never be the same again.
In his first full-length novel since since the critically acclaimed Return to Innocence (1st ed. 1999), G. M. Frazier takes us back to a simpler and more carefree time in American life with an uncompromising coming of age story that deals with hard-hitting issues that are tackled head-on with courage, not only by the writer, but by the characters he has created. For readers who spent their tween on teen years in the late 60s, A Death on the Wolf will take you back to a familiar time and introduce you to unforgettable characters. For younger readers, the story will give you a glimpse of teenage life that is no more, and yet shows how courage, morality, and friendship are timeless concepts in the face of life’s trials and tribulations.

Ivana is another waitress at Marcellino, one of the few who aggressively resists Evelyn’s control and the new found power she has found following her employment. Frankie the bartender is different, as he evades Evelyn, having grown up in poverty in the South Bronx, experiencing all kinds of hardship. Then there’s Germano, the owner, who cunningly finds a way to trap his employees as they try to establish more promising lives for themselves. In the end the habits these four individuals have formed as a way to satiate their lust for money or power inevitably brings about their less than desirable fate.

System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation–each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives–and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. The Shell Collector: Stories by Anthony Doerr
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, Literary, Short Stories, Single Author, United States, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
I n this astonishingly assured, exquisitely crafted debut collection, Anthony Doerr takes readers from the African coast to the suburbs of Ohio, from sideshow pageantry to harsh wilderness survival, charting a vast and varied emotional landscape. Like the best storytellers, Doerr explores the human condition in all its manifestations: metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts. Most dazzling is Doerr’s gift for conjuring nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of his characters contend with tremendous hardship; some discover unique gifts; all arc united by their ultimate deference to the mysteries of their respective landscapes. In “The Hunter’s Wife,” a hunter’s profession is challenged when he learns that his wife can communicate with animal spirits. “For a Long Time This Was Griselda’s Story” features two sisters in Idaho struggling to come to terms with the very different paths they have chosen, one traveling the globe with a sideshow and one remaining with her mother in their hometown. In “July 4th,” a group of wealthy Americans enters a bet with a gang of British sportsmen: the first side to land the largest freshwater fish on each of the continents wins. The title story describes a blind marine biologist who isolates himself in a thatch-roofed kibanda in Kenya, only to be thrust into the spotlight when he accidentally discovers the cure for a fatal disease. Like all of Doerr’s stories, it shimmers with beautiful language and transports readers to a perfectly realized, magical world of his own creation. The Shell Collector is an enchanting and imaginative debut by a young writer embarking on an important literary career.

S ara Blakemore’s normal life is turned on its head in the space of days. First her husband tells her he’s having an affair. Then she inherits Turtledove Hill, a vineyard on the northern California coast complete with haunted mansion.
Joss Montague can’t remember his life, and he doesn’t know how long he’s been wandering in the cold mist. When a young woman finds his journal, his past comes back to him as she reads each page.
Sara’s husband Bram comes to Turtledove Hill to save their marriage, but she can’t help comparing him to the man in the journal she found — especially after she meets Joss Montague’s ghost up close and extremely personal.
The man of Sara’s dreams is only a ghost, and the one who seeks her forgiveness is very much alive. Sara must let one rest in peace before she can find happiness with the other.
Excerpt:
Sara turned her car onto Bird Row to look for parking. She needed to find Spot and ask how to de-ghostify Turtledove Hill. Bram’s truck was parked crooked next to the hitching rail in front of The Book Beak, taking up two spaces.
“What a jerk.” Joss materialized in the passenger seat.
“Go away,” Sara said. “You’re hardly one to complain about taking more than your share of space.”
“True. As you know, I am a rather large guy.”
“Oh, ick. If that’s supposed to be sexual innuendo, don’t forget you were using another man’s…largeness.” She turned at the next corner to go around the block.
“The ignominy of it all!” Joss put his hand to his forehead in mock shame. “Wait. Is it IG-nominy or ig-NOM-iny? That’s one of those words you only read but never actually hear anyone say.”
“IG-nuh-minnie,” Sara said. “I’m an English teacher. Or I was one, anyway.”
“Oh, really.” He had a gleam in his eye. “Can I be teacher’s pet?”
“Why are you here?”
“I don’t know. It feels like I’m stuck to you. Psychically or something.”
“That’s just what I need in my life. Jakey Twilighty imprinting creepiness.”
“Imprinting? You mean like a duckling?” His face screwed up like he didn’t know what she was talking about. But of course he wouldn’t. He’d missed decades’ worth of changes in the zeitgeist. “I think it’s worse than that. Seriously, Sara. Our…lovemaking was pretty intense. I believe I’m stuck to you spiritually.
“Because the earth moved, you mean.”
“Well, yeah. For me. God, is sex like that normal with you?”
No, it wasn’t. But that was none of Joss’s business. “You have to leave me alone.”
“I don’t have control over it. I’ll keep showing up. In your life. In your car–”
“In my bed?”
He smiled. “Who knows?”
“Go away. I’m married.”
“Maybe.” His voice softened. “But is he?”
And there it was, the question she avoided, hanging in the air as she pulled the car into an open parking space. Her heart hurt. She wiped her eyes and pointed emphatically to her wedding band. “I’m married, Joss.”
He smiled again, with a mischievous glint in his eye. “You called me Joss.” His voice was caring and sexy, warm and inviting, and he dissipated to nothing.

Bed: A Novel by David Whitehouse
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Contemporary, Genre Fiction, Coming of Age, Literary, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction
R eminiscent of such novels as A Confederacy of Dunces and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Bed is a darkly funny and surprisingly tender debut novel about two brothers, one of whom refuses to leave his bed on his twenty-fifth birthday. Mal Ede, a child of untamed manners and unbounded curiosity, is the eccentric eldest son of an otherwise typical middle-class family. But as the wonders of childhood fade into the responsibilities of adulthood, Mal’s spirits fade too. On his twenty-fifth birthday, disillusioned, Mal goes to bed–back to his childhood bed–and never emerges again. Narrated by Mal’s shy, diligent younger brother, Bed details Mal’s subsequent extreme and increasingly grotesque transformation: immobility and a gargantuan appetite combine, over the course of two decades, to make him the fattest man in the world. Despite his seclusion and his refusal to explain his motivations, Mal’s condition earns him worldwide notoriety and a cult of followers convinced he is making an important statement about modern life. But Mal’s actions will also change the lives of his haunted parents, his brother and the woman they both love, Lou. In Bed, David Whitehouse has put a magnifying glass on contemporary society. Hailed as a “momentous” (The Bookseller) debut in the UK, Bed is a mordantly funny and ultimately redemptive parable about mortality, obesity, celebrity, depression and the broken promises of adulthood. It is one of the most audacious debut novels in years.

Blackberries, Blackberries by Crystal Wilkinson
Genre(s): Literature & Fiction, Literary, Short Stories, Single Author, Literary Fiction
W inner of the 2002 CHAFFIN LITERARY AWARDAn enchanting, haunting collection of stories by Crystal Wilkinson, a self-described Black, country girl and poet from rural Kentucky. The stories explore the joys and pain of the women of “Affrilachia”, and will touch the reader profoundly.”I grew up on a farm in Indian Creek, Kentucky during the seventies. I swam in creeks and roamed the knobs and hills. We had an outhouse and no inside running water. Our house was heated by coal and wood-burning stoves and we lived so far back in the woods that we could get only one television station. But it was a place of beauty – trees, green grass and blue sky as far as you could see. I am country. Being country is as much a part of me as my full lips, wide hips, dreadlocks and high cheek bones. There are many Black country folks who have lived and are living in small towns, up hollers and across knobs. They are all over the South–scattered like milk thistle seeds in the wind. The stories in this book are centered in these places.” – Crystal E. Wilkinson

Journey With Me ABC’s (KDI Childrens Books) by J Adam
Genre(s): Sports & Games, Activity Comics & Graphic Novels, Graphic Novels, Fantasy, Sports & Activities
A s a children’s book author I really enjoyed creating this Kindle book and I hope it will be the first of many.
Journey With Me ABC’s grew out of a desire to create the types of childrens books that can be enjoyed by both parents and children together.
I want to encourage parents to read to their children. Studies have shown that reading to children is an invaluable activity that will help children to build literacy skills. Not to mention helping children to develop a love of reading.
Some Examples Of Rhymes From The Book:
A is for astronaut, way out in space,
And the apple and artichoke there on your plate.
A is a vowel, and for aardvark too–
Four others are vowels, and you’ll meet them quite soon.
B is for babboon and bananas that peel,
And bees and a bear looking for a meal.
B is a consonant that works well with others–
Like blender, broccoli, and even your brothers.
C is for crocodiles and corn-on-the-cob,
And cranes, big machines doing their job.
C starts words like crackle and crunch,
Just like the sounds when you’re eating your lunch.
You and your children will have fun teaching your children the alphabet with Journey With Me ABC’s. They will
love the illustratons and the rhymes.
So I hope you decide to order Journey With Me ABC’s today
