The Tudors: The Complete Story of England’s Most Notorious Dynasty by G.J. Meyer
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Ethnic & National, Irish, Historical, British, Leaders & Notable People, Royalty, History, Europe, England, Ireland
B ONUS: This edition contains a The Tudors discussion guide.
Acclaimed historian G. J. Meyer provides a fresh look at the fabled Tudor dynasty–and some of the most enigmatic figures ever to rule a country. In 1485, Henry Tudor, whose claim to the English throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, nevertheless sailed from France with a ragtag army to take the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four centuries. Fifty years later, his son, Henry VIII, aimed to seize even greater powers–ultimately leaving behind a brutal legacy that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. Edward VI, a fervent believer in reforming the English church, died before realizing his dream. Mary I, the disgraced daughter of Catherine of Aragon, tried and failed to reestablish the Catholic Church and produce an heir, while Elizabeth I sacrificed all chance of personal happiness in order to survive.
The Tudors presents the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, of this enthralling era.

Reviews:
“I read your book … It was good!” — Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook
“Moving and meaningful… Its suspenseful ending leaves us all waiting with bated breath for the romantic sequel…This is more than just an urban love story, it’s a human story.” — Abiola Abrams, host of BET’s The Best Shorts
“Captures those fleeting but powerful moments in young love.” — Luis J. Rodriguez, author of Always Running
“Forever My Lady is a wonderful book. It describes in vivid words about the main character, Dio, and the problems he goes through for his girl. Just by the prologue anyone could tell that it was going to be a gripping page-turner. It’s about love and doing what’s right for yourself and others.” — VOYA
“Dio “Playboy” Rodríguez grows up poor with a drunk single mother in gritty Las Vegas, leading him into gang life at 13. Now 17, Dio hides a softer side beneath a fierce exterior that’s known only to his middle school sweetheart, Jennifer. But when a drive-by leaves Jennifer wounded and sends Dio to prison boot camp, their soul mate relationship is put to the test. Rivera, who originally self-published this debut, traces a classic redemptive arc: perpetually scowling Dio resists the authority of drill instructor Jackson and clashes with fellow inmates, but he pours out his heart in letters to Jennifer, forms meaningful peer relationships and gains an appreciation for discipline. A genuine care for dynamic Dio allows Rivera to deliver a sincere story of transformation.” — Publishers Weekly
“Jeff Rivera’s thought-provoking novel, Forever My Lady, is part romance, part coming-of-age tale. Reminiscent of novels by S.E. Hinton, Rivera’s story vividly portrays the intensity of young love and a young man’s struggle for redemption. This touching book kept me in its grip from the first page to the last.” — Karen McQuestion, author of A Scattered Life

FLYING DRUNK: The True Story of a Northwest Airlines Flight, Three Drunk Pilots, and One Man’s Fight for Redemption by Joseph Balzer
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs, Memoirs, Health Fitness & Dieting, Addiction & Recovery, Alcoholism, History, Military, Aviation, World, Professional & Technical, Transportation, Commercial, Recovery
M arch 8, 1990: An intoxicated three-man crew, including Flight Engineer Joseph Balzer, fly a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 with 91 passengers aboard from Fargo, North Dakota to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
July 25, 1990: All three pilots stand trial for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol; all three are convicted and sent to federal prison.
July 26, 1990 – present: Joe Balzer fights for redemption and to regain all that he has lost. Flying Drunk is his story.
Since he was a young boy, Joe Balzer dreamed of flying. He pursued his goal with a vigorous passion and earned his pilot licenses, piling up hours of flight time with a wide variety of planes and jets with one overarching goal: to one day fly for a major airline. But Joe had a problem. He was an alcoholic and refused to admit to himself that he had a problem.
His alcoholism caught up with him in March 1990, when Joe was arrested with two other pilots for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol. His world began crumbling around him and his new marriage faced the ultimate test. He lost his promising career and his dignity. Every major media outlet, including The New York Times, Newsweek, and Time Magazine covered the shocking story for the stunned American flying public. The trial that followed drained Joe’s life’s savings and federal prison nearly broke him. Flying Drunk is Joe’s bittersweet and thoroughly chilling memoir of his twisted journey to a Federal courtroom, his time in the notorious Federal penitentiary system in Atlanta, and his struggle to recapture all that he held dear.
Today, Joe is a recovering alcoholic, celebrating more than nineteen years of sobriety. The long road back from perdition led him to American Airlines, where good people and a great organization recognized a talented pilot who had cleaned up his act and was ready to fly again, safely.
Flying Drunk is an incredible journey of the human spirit, from childhood to hell, and back again. Everyone should read and heed its message of hope and redemption. No one who does will ever forget it.
About the Author: Joe Balzer is a pilot for American Airlines with more than 15,000 hours of flight experience. He has a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Education and is also an inspirational speaker, traveling around the country speaking to pilots and other groups on the dangers of alcohol and other addictions, bringing his audience to laughter and tears with his powerful message of hope. Joe lives in Tennessee with his wife Deborah and their two children. Flying Drunk is his first book.
REVIEWS
“Balzer was part of the infamous three-man crew that in 1990 piloted a Northwest Airlines commercial flight from Fargo, ND, to Minneapolis while intoxicated. All three lost their jobs and flying licenses and served time in federal prison. Driven by his faith in God and the support of his family and friends, Balzer struggled to overcome his addiction. Today, sober for nearly two decades, he flies for American Airlines. Listeners will be captivated by his tale of redemption, which he engagingly reads. Recommended for those dealing with their own or a loved one’s addiction issues.”Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ. Lib., Parkersburg

The Famous Union by Michael Meyer
Genre(s): Humor & Entertainment, Humor, Satire, Literature & Fiction, Genre Fiction, Comic Fiction
A ROLLICKING ROMP THROUGH THE HALLS OF ACADEMIA, THE FAMOUS UNION by Michael Meyer has readers saying that it has “flashes of Vonnegut,” that it is “an academic version of Catch 22,” that it “is a hoot!” and that it is “one of few books that has made me laugh out loud.”
Famous Union is a pretty little college with expensive fountains, cute coeds, and brand new artificial turf on the football field. It seems like the perfect place to work, but not all is as it seems, especially when bungling administrators create theater-of-the-absurd conditions in this once very proud institution of higher learning. Hampered by severe budgetary problems, the powers-that-be at Famous Union College create situations that bring about comical chaos for faculty and students alike. How will the often eccentric characters cope with the drastic changes suddenly thrust upon them, where compromise is a four-letter word? Famous Union College is a place where what is what is not.
EXCERPT
But after a particularly unproductive day cluttered with nothing more than boredom, Bill Ferris finally had had it; he knew he had to get away, or else, so he ventured across campus to the college cafeteria for an early dinner.
“What’s the special today?” he asked the young coed who was on the ready to take his order.
“Buzzgetti.”
“What’s that?” asked Ferris.
“Buzzgetti.”
“What?” asked Ferris again.
“Buzzgetti,” said the young unsmiling coed, her face clearly demonstrating her growing impatience with the guy.
“Is that some type of local specialty. I’ve never heard of it,” said Bill Ferris.
“Buzzgetti,” the tortured young thing said, two octaves too loudly for the crowded cafeteria.
Bill Ferris, finally resigned to the fact that he was not about to get any further information from her, decided what the hell. “I’ll take a stab at it,” he said.
When his plate was finally handed over to him, Ferris sighed deeply, refraining purposely from uttering what he truly felt inside. What good would it do? What purpose would it serve? As he looked down at his plate of probably day-old spaghetti, most likely heated-over canned stuff, to boot, he was thinking that nothing around the place made any sense at all. The place had gone completely insane, crazy. Loco. It seemed more a lunatic asylum than a place of scholarly reflection and application.
But what a fitting end to his day, he also thought, as the tasteless special of the day churned around his intestines like worms squirming to their death on a sunburned sidewalk.
