The United States of Nostalgia by Vincent Licastro

Everything at Tupelo Reach Academy gives out slowly and then asks to be used one more time.

The air-conditioning. The copy machine. The teachers.Sometimes the children.

Hurricane Katrina forced Landry from New Orleans at fourteen. Years later, he returned to the city and built his adult life around teaching at Tupelo Reach Academy, an alternative high school in New Orleans East and one of the last places left for students other schools no longer know how, or are no longer willing, to serve.

His students arrive carrying files filled with diagnoses, suspensions, court involvement, failed placements, and other adults' descriptions of who they've become. At Tupelo, Landry tries to teach them literature while the institution around them measures attendance, behavior, compliance, and progress. Almost everything can be documented. Almost nothing important can.

With two weeks remaining in the school year, empty desks multiplying, and Landry's contract for next year still unsigned, a lesson on Oliver Twist raises a question he cannot stop thinking about:

When does childhood end?

The answers lead from Dickensian workhouses to American schools, from The Wizard of Oz to juvenile detention, from the mythology of the American Dream to the promises made after Hurricane Katrina. Again and again, Landry finds the same dividing line: some children are permitted dependence, mistakes, imagination, and time. Others are expected to become useful before they have been allowed to become anything else.

Outside the classroom, New Orleans begins to look increasingly familiar. A city can be treated like a child, Landry realizes. It can be promised protection, investment, recovery, and a future. It can also be blamed when those promises fail.

As the final days of school disappear and the limits of what Landry can do for his students become harder to ignore, those questions turn inward. What does it mean to spend your life trying to help inside institutions built to measure outcomes you cannot control? What happens when care becomes indistinguishable from usefulness? And how much of the past do we have to forget before we can call it nostalgia?

What happens when a city and the children who will inherit it are shaped by the same unkept promises of care, protection, and a future worth investing in?

Set in present-day New Orleans, The United States of Nostalgia is a literary novel about education, fatherhood, childhood, and the stories America tells about who deserves to be protected. Moving between classroom life, literature, history, and the unfinished legacy of Hurricane Katrina, it asks what becomes of children, and places, when the promises made to them were always easier to celebrate than to keep.
