Nairobi’s Adventures in Kenya by Tom Kavanaugh

A trip to Kenya becomes the adventure that changes everything.
Eleven-year-old Nairobi is excited to visit Kenya, the country where her parents were born. She cannot wait to meet her cousin Keturah, see wild animals, and explore a place she has only heard about in family stories.
But from the moment the trip begins, Nairobi has a problem she cannot shake. She wants a phone. Her mom says no. Then Nairobi meets Keturah, who not only has a phone, but also runs her own small business selling handmade bracelets and ornaments.
Suddenly, Nairobi’s dream vacation is mixed with jealousy, comparison, and questions she does not know how to answer.
As Nairobi travels through Kenya with her family, every new experience teaches her something unexpected. She visits Nairobi National Park and learns about poachers and orphaned elephants. She explores Watamu Beach, sees dolphins and whales from a glass-bottom boat, visits a snake farm, learns about Maasai culture, watches a camel derby, faces her fear of heights, and discovers the power of kindness through Keturah’s Kid Biz Club.
Along the way, Nairobi learns about:
• Family, friendship, and staying connected across distance
• Kenyan culture, food, language, wildlife, and traditions
• Jealousy, courage, disappointment, fear, and self control
• Phone safety and choosing friends wisely
• Entrepreneurship for kids through Keturah’s Kollection
• Clean water, giving, volunteering, and helping others
• How one child’s choices can create a ripple effect
Nairobi’s Adventures in Kenya is perfect for middle grade readers who enjoy travel stories, family adventures, cultural discovery, animals, friendship, and books with heart.
Funny, thoughtful, and full of meaningful lessons, this story reminds young readers that growing up is not just about getting what you want. It is about learning who you are, seeing the needs of others, and discovering how much good you can do right where you are.
