My Clockwork Muse (The Poe Files Mysteries) by D.R. Erickson
Genre(s): Fantasy, Historical Fantasy
N ew York City, 1847: A madman is on the loose. Someone is committing murders in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales of terror. The police are stymied. When a corpse is found interred in a masonry wall in a subterranean chamber, they call on Poe himself to help solve the crime.
Edgar Allan Poe’s fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, has made the author famous as the master of deductive reasoning. But when “the father of the detective story” applies his powers of discovery to the “Poe Murders”, he finds that the clues lead in only one direction: to Poe himself.
Poe soon becomes the prime suspect, and he begins to doubt his own sanity as the evidence piles up against him. What of his somnambulistic trances that often find him at the graveside of his late wife, Virginia? Or the bizarre raven that visits him in his Fordham cottage? The strange mark on his neck? The odd behavior of his one-eyed cat, Pluto? And what of his doctor, Coppelius — he of the bulging pale blue eye — and his beautiful, other-worldly daughter, Olimpia? Nothing is as it seems.
As the police tighten their noose around Poe’s neck, he races against time to solve the crimes and clear his name. But he soon finds himself confronting horrors that not even his macabre fiction could have envisioned — and a conspiracy that threatens the very fabric of reality itself.
Prepare yourself for a wild ride. This is not your father’s Edgar Allan Poe. This Poe’s packin’ heat…

Secrets Among the Shadows by Sally Berneathy
Genre(s): Romance, Romantic Suspense
R omantic suspense with paranormal elements
Eliot Kane fears he’s a modern day Jekyll and Hyde.
Eliot dreams in graphic detail about choking a woman. The next day, he learns that woman is the victim of a brutal murder. From his dream Eliot knows details about that murder that haven’t been released to the public, details only the killer can know. He seeks the help of psychiatrist Leanne Warner to learn if he’s a murderer, if he has a personality split and a monster named Edward lives inside his brain. Eliot doesn’t dare love Leanne because Edward wants to kill her.
Leanne looks out her bedroom window in the middle of the night and sees Eliot Kane leaning against a tree, watching her. He straightens when he sees her, stands erect and returns her gaze. In the pale glow from the corner street lamp, his eyes seem to blaze. She can almost feel the hatred coming from him. Evil surrounds him like an aura. It’s there in his stance, in the tilt of his head, in the very air around him, and it’s directed toward her.
But that’s crazy. Eliot doesn’t hate her. Is she looking at Edward?

The Last Explorer by Simon Nasht
T his riveting biography recounts the life of the world’s first truly modern explorer, a life of unrelenting adventure and the high drama of polar exploration. Hubert Wilkins was the most successful explorer in history: no one saw with his own eyes more undiscovered land and sea. Largely self-taught, he was a celebrated reporter, pilot, spy, war hero, scientist, and adventurer. He captured in his lens war and famine, cheated death repeatedly, met world leaders like Lenin, Mussolini, and King George V, and circled the globe on a zeppelin. Knighted for being the first person to fly across the North Pole, Wilkins was also the first to fly in the Antarctic, discover land by airplane, and take a submarine under the Arctic ice.
Reviews
Simon Nasht’s thoroughly captivating account of the exploits of Hubert Wilkins makes for an exhilarating edge-of-your-seat read.” — John Berendt

Autobiography of a Hobo by Henry Chandler
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs
H enry T Chandler, “Hobo,” “Hank” or “Happy” to those who knew him, was born in Boston in the late 1800’s and traveled widely around the turn of the century. He spent time in Hawaii and Canada, and hopped trains from New York to San Diego. His careers included writing articles for newspapers, baseball umpire, miner, seaman, salesman and tobacco entrepreneur.
Rather than gloat over having read the book already, or blather on about the artistic merits of the prose, let me just introduce you to a member of a “voluntary despised minority,” a hobo. Neither a tramp or a bindlestiff, a goofer or a snowbird, a hobo is a knight of the road, looking down upon the lowly beggars he sometimes shares his sleeping quarters with.
Before being homeless was cool, and I dare say, before anyone alive today rode a train, “Hobo” Chandler was dodging the cops and railroad men. In a hat, coat and tie he would stow away on any train or ship he took a fancy to. Neither suffering from mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency, and having no aversion to work when it suited his purposes, Chandler traveled widely, and was able to capture the feeling of a time long gone in his words.
Baseball fans will find many chapters devoted to the early days of baseball, and Chan spent many hours both playing and later umpiring when injury prevented him from continuing his major league career. Also included in the book is John L. Sullivan’s last known written correspondence, addressed to the author’s uncle.
Please be offended by the racist remarks, but not so offended you put the book down, remember that this was written by a man who saw the next to last century turn into the twentieth. Attitudes that we consider offensive today were the cultural norm, and to ignore our history excludes us from learning its lessons. Many archaic terms of speech, exclamation points, and hyphenated words await you.
This book was originally written in English Longhand, of which a sample can be found on the front leaf. This book was submitted multiple times for publishing, and suffered multiple rejections for various reasons. It took 12 years to decipher from the original longhand into a typewritten version, and it took an additional several years before the text could be modernized to bring you the version you are about to enjoy!

What’s Love Got To Do With It? How a Conversation with Ray Bradbury Changed My Life by David Boyne
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs
“ Oh, God Almighty! I just want to go on being me! I’m on very good terms with myself. I’ve had a wonderful life, a terrific life. I’ve done all the things that I’ve wanted to do. When I was just out of high school I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t write a decent poem, I couldn’t write a short story, I couldn’t write a play, I couldn’t write an essay, I couldn’t write a screenplay. So one by one, over the years, by staying in love, I became a poet, I became a short story writer, I became a novelist, I became a screenwriter—but it was all love, you see?”

M iraculous tale of how a boy, born into unimaginable physical and emotional pain and destined to be a misfit, finds his way in a world of “others.? Few could survive so many torturous years of surgical intervention and a ensuing lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol addiction and come out ahead. This moving tale reveals not only the struggle and heartrending elements of generational lives “gone wrong,? but also the love and growth of a human being overcoming the odds and determined to find a way to live life to the fullest. It is clear that it is the hope of this author that the reader’s conclusions will lead to a more fulfilled view of the “parallel beauty that lives just beneath the surface for us all.”

THE REVIEWS
“Nearly one hundred seventy years following his death at age fifty-seven from a throat ailment, the name of the Italian virtuoso, Niccolò Paganini, continues to conjure up a variety of associations: those of a gaunt, nearly spectral showman and breathless daredevil of the violin, an inveterate gambler, an incorrigible womanizer, and — stated sotto voce — the Devil’s collaborator…A ‘devilish’ master performing his wizardry only inches away from the powerful Christian symbols placed at the very heart of his majestic violin! This, indeed, is the stuff of legend and provides the perfect vehicle for PAGANINI’S FIRE.”
– Stephanie Chase, Concert Violinist and Educator
Reviews of Ann Abelson’s other books:
“…a highly interesting story.”
– New York Times Book Review of “The Little Conquerors”.
“Miss Abelson has something to say and says it with individuality…”

The children have their own interweaving lives and relationships to pursue. Kindle Daily Deal – Psychopath (Crimescape)

Psychopath (Crimescape) by Dr. Katherine Ramsland (Author), Marilyn Bardsley (Editor)
“ (A 69-page True Crime Short with photographs) H. H. Holmes was a central character in Erik Larson’s hugely successful The Devil in the White City, which is planned as a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Holmes is commonly viewed as a real-life Hannibal Lecter, a devious and cunning serial killer without equal. Holmes used the persona of a successful doctor and entrepreneur to draw untold numbers of young women to his three-story Chicago hotel to experiment on before killing them. Not one to waste, he’d often deflesh the corpses to sell the skeletons to medical schools. He enjoyed trying out methods of murder and watching his victims die. Scientists from his era believed Holmes’ brain would unlock the secret of his perversity, but he denied them the chance to find out. Today, we can figure him out without access to his brain. We know more today about the neuroscience of sadistic psychopaths and we can better understand what his brain – if dissected – would reveal. For the first time, we can look to research findings about killers to decode Holmes’s vile behavior.
From Psychopath:
“After the girls died, he’d enjoy viewing ‘their blackened and distorted faces’ before he dug a shallow grave, removed their clothing, and dumped them into it with ‘fiendish delight.’ Holmes considered that ‘for eight years before their deaths I had been almost as much a father to them as though they had been my own children.’
“It is precisely this behavior that most puzzles the ordinary person and draws the researcher’s attention: how can a man torture and asphyxiate children, or burn them and view it as entertainment? How can he ‘befriend’ them for years, knowing the whole time that he will end their lives? How can he describe it as pleasurable? This is the reason the psychopath holds our fascination. It’s why researchers even during Holmes’s era tried extracting criminal brains post-mortem for study. They hoped to locate the seat of disturbed moral consciousness.”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Katherine Ramsland, who teaches forensic psychology and criminal justice at Pennsylvania’s DeSales University, is unique in having extensive experience in researching and writing about crime and the vampire subculture. She holds graduate degrees in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, philosophy and criminal justice. Meets Girl: A Novel by Will Entrekin
Genre(s): Literary Fiction, Fantasy
“ It’s romance and fairy tales. But it’s magic and whimsy too. It’s a writer’s lament and a coming-of-age tale (for lack of a better cliché.) It’s experimentation and taking chances. It’s poetry and music. It’s love and art.” -LL Book Review
“Silly and poignant and real . . . This isn’t a love letter to Veronica as much as a love letter to the process of falling in love, and to that of writing a novel. . . delightfully hyper-aware of its own storytelling.” -Books I Done Read
“A great read indeed . . . Entrekin has really shown himself to be a first rate novelist with Meets Girl. The story crackles with energy as it progresses toward a satisfying conclusion.” -The Outer View

T urds in the Punch Bowl is not your ordinary tale of friendship. Though unconventional in its material, this story is both hilarious and sweet. Arresting Grace by Michael Joel Green
Genre(s): Biographies & Memoirs
M ichael Green expected many things from his 38th year: to redeem a failed acting/music/writing career, to build upon friendships and church relationships, and most of all, to finally meet someone. He’d been looking—and waiting—a long time.
What he didn’t expect was to get arrested for a DUI, driving home from a church dinner. That changed everything.
It was a shame, too. Two weeks earlier, he had met someone.
“Arresting Grace” is the story of Michael Green’s DUI arrest, as well as his long distance relationship with Jessie, a charming woman from the Bay Area. Thoughtfully written and raw, with unflinching honesty, Arresting Grace recalls such works as Donald Miller’s “Blue Like Jazz” and Anne LaMott’s “Grace (Eventually)”. A man searches for answers most earnestly when he’s brought low. This is the story of a man, fallen lower than imaginable, searching for God in the midst…and finding grace in the most unexpected places.

Genre(s): Young Adult
B orderline is a skewed coming-of-age story of a normal boy in a crazy world — a fast-paced world of high-tech gismos, global air travel and antibiotics, a world in which high schools have replaced cafeterias with fast food counters and the scourges of autism, asthma, allergies, diabetes and obesity are the norm.
“Borderline is a book that works on so many levels that it is almost unclassifiable. It is a genuinely warm, tender, humorous coming of age story while at the same time being a novel that is smart, informative and illuminating in the fields of genetics, autism as an increasingly proliferating condition, fast food and obesity as national crises, and the overemphasis of pill-popping for invented childhood and adult disorders. Sounds like too much information to compress into one book? Not in the deft hands of author Bonnie Rozanski! For all of the intelligent and interesting information the book contains, the story itself is an amazingly fresh novel, written with great style and sensitivity, a novel than will appeal to just about everyone no matter the age group.” –Grady Harp
“A brilliant coming-of-age story, Borderline portrays an overwhelmed older brother, an over-ignored son, and a determined caregiver in the form of Guy Ritter. And as if a teacher who has it out for you, a best friend who won’t stop eating and a temperamental semi-girlfriend isn’t enough, Guy’s also been dealing with his “austinistic” brother for way too long. And all that bulk has a lot of stress piggy-backed onto it. What can a thirteen-year-old kid do when his best friend’s father’s fast food feasting becomes perilous? And what will the utterly impulsive Guy do when he comes across the majestic experiment animal that soon becomes his best friend? And what about his brother’s controversial treatment? And most of all, can one child really deal with all that?” –L Spro flamingnet.com

This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers’ Bible Quilt and Other Pieces by Kyra E. Hicks
Genre(s): Nonfiction, Biographies & Memoirs, History
T he powerful quilts of Harriet Powers (1837-1910), a former Athens, Georgia slave, continue to capture our imagination today. Her two-known creations, the Bible Quilt and the Pictorial Quilt, have independently survived since stitched more than a century ago. Over the years, thousands of museum visitors to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston have stood transfixed viewing her artwork.
Powers’ two quilts are arguably the most well-known and cited coverings in American quilt history. But, until today, no one has told the entire, dramatic story of how these two quilts, one of which initially sold for $5, were coveted, cared for, and cherished for decades in private homes before emerging as priceless, national treasures.
This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers’ Bible Quilt and Other Pieces brings to light new, exciting facts – many never before published: complete exhibition history for both known quilts; proof Harriet Powers was a literate, award-winning quilter, who stitched at least five quilts and promoted her own artwork; profiles of the two nineteenth century women who sought to purchase the Bible Quilt; profiles of the three men who once owned the Pictorial Quilt; unveiling of a young artist who embellished the Pictorial Quilt; and the name of the person who first made the connection in the twentieth century that Harriet Powers stitched both quilts.
This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers’ Bible Quilt and Other Pieces is the most comprehensive resource guide on this influential African American quilter. The book includes nearly 200 bibliographic references, most annotative, including books, exhibition catalogs, newspapers, plays, poetry, interactive map and more. For the first time ever, readers are provided with clues and encouraged to search for Harriet Powers’ lost 1882 Lord’s Supper Quilt.
This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers’ Bible Quilt and Other Pieces is written by Kyra E. Hicks, a quilter whose story quilts have appeared in over forty group exhibitions in places such as the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY, the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the American Folk Art Museum in NY. Hicks is the author of Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook and Martha Ann’s Quilt for Queen Victoria. She lives in Arlington, Virginia.

The Whisper Jar by Carole Lanham
Genre(s): Horror
“ I do not know what you have done, but put your mouth right here. Confess your crime to this fruit jar as though it were God’s ear.” ~ from The Whisper Jar
Some secrets are kept in jars — others, in books.
Some are left forgotten in musty rooms — others, created in old barns.
Some are brought about by destiny — others, born in blood.
Secrets — they are the hidden heart of this collection. In these pages, you will encounter a Blood Digger who bonds two children irrevocably together; a young woman who learns of her destiny through the random selection of a Bible verse; and a boy whose life begins to reflect the stories he reads…
“If you like dark, creepy stories with a theme of secrets and dark characters, you’re going to love this (I did!). It’s the perfect read for Halloween, and I can certainly recommend it highly. I had a great time with all of these stories, and it’s no surprise to me that all these stories have won acclaim in their own right.”
Colin F. Barnes, author of Killing my Boss
“Every now and then, a collection of short stories comes along that not only brings creepiness to new levels, but reaches in a little deeper and leaves something behind. The stories in The Whisper Jar are like that…they stick with you like soft voices in the memory. A great book for a dark and stormy night…”
David Niall Wilson, Award-winning author of Deep Blue, This is My Blood, and CEO of Crossroad Press
“Few writers can make love seem so horrible, or horror seem so lovely. The weird scenes Lanham paints for us are poignant and final, with hope strangled – but always in some strangely uplifting way. Perhaps gruesome and memorable are the best words to describe her work.”
Dr. Kim Paffenroth, author of Dying to Live and Gospel of the Living Dead

Blood Orchids (The Lei Crime Series) by Toby Neal
Genre(s): Mystery & Thrillers
F ast-paced crime mystery with a touch of romance, readers call Blood Orchids “un-putdownable”!
“Sometimes in crime fiction you stumble across a character who lives on beyond the book’s end by virtue of their psychological complexity, and the richness with which the author has drawn them. Will Graham, Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, and now they have a worthy female counterpart in Lei Teixera. Blood Orchids is that rarity among debut novels, in that it satisfies on every level. A powerful new talent is on the scene, whole-heartedly recommended.”-Drew Cross, former police officer and author of BiteMarks
